Alsace and Lorraine were intregal parts of Medieval Germany. The Hapsburgs themselves came from Lorraine. However, the French conquerored them in the 30 years war and Francisized the people. This is an outrage they are as much a part of Germany as Kosovo is of Serbia.

Actually Bismark was against the annexation of Alsace and Lorraine at the end of the Franco-Prussian war. He even put that in writing:

"Besides, if Prussia were to gain the victory over France, what would be the result? Supposing we did win Alsace, we would have to maintain our conquest and to keep Strasbourg perpetually garrisoned. This would be an impossible position, for in the end the French would find new allies--and then we might have a bad time."

However the victorious Prussian generals' point of view that the two provinces are vital for Germany's defense (they were not) resulted in a PR campaign in favor of the annexation in all the major German newspapers. The generals proved better politicians than him on that occasion and he had to give in.

I'm not sure about Vilnius - Lithuania was a powerful state in the 14th century and later entered a commonwealth with Poland, so it's not like they've been battering the hell out of each other over the city down through the ages.
