    Default Close the damn gate!!!!

I have a repeating problem when I'm under siege; if I sally out with some horse units to take out the enemy artillery before they smash my walls in, when I retreat those units back inside my walls the gates will not close. I've tried getting a unit in and out again, but most of the times they just stay open and let the enemy army come marching right in. Anyone else experience this?

It is probably that one of your other units is standing too close to the gate. Remove all units that are deployed close to the gate and the gate will close.
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.

    Tosa will be missed.

I learned that lesson when I first started playing. I set my guys up at the gate and sent some cavalry out to mess with the enemy. They chased me back to the gate and I thought the gate would close but the guys I set up there were too close for the gate to close and I ended up letting the enemy in without them having to work lol. I guess the guys weren't too close to open the gate though.

I had a problem with a gate in my g/fs Brittania campaign. She'd reduced the Norwegians to just having Castle Town on the Isle of Man but they had 4 full stacks there (how they had money for it i'll never know, I swear the AI cheats for cash!). She beseiged the castle with her one stack and they sallied, having 2 full stacks as reinforcements and let me do the battle for her. I figured that the only way to win would be to destroy the sallying sack, capture the gate and castle, then just wait it out. I butchered the stack that came out (Highland Nobles + Noble Pikes are ace) and captured the gate, dunking a unit of archers in the town centre. There was only one gate to get into this town and I got the little message saying "Building Captured - Gate" so I thought, fantastic, i'll just wait 3 mins. The reinforcing stacks came along and just walked straight through the flipping gate! My remaining forces tried to hold them off but the sheer numbers of Norwegians just made them run away and with 2 seconds on the counter left, they got people into the town square and made me lose

Or that an enemy unit is nearby, then they wont open either.

I had the same problem before so I am 90% sure that Monsieur Alphonse is right. You have to keep a distance between the gate and units behind it. It's all about knowing how far you have to be. You'll probably get used to it very soon.

Drives me crazy too, but the only solution I have found is once they sally forth, they are done. Have them harass then retreat, harass then retreat. Also it can be a great strategy, enemy spearmen will go all over the place when they see horses. I had one siege where 4 seperate units of spearmen were enticed to chase some light cavalry back and forth in front of two units of Genoese Crossbowmen, didn't go well for them....
