Archers can fire from behind the lines without necessarily slaughtering your own men, they can alternate to flaming arrows, they have longer range... are slingers inherently inferior in all ways to archers?

Well, slingers have better accuracy I think, or just better ammo, because put it this way. Slingers can completely destroy and rout a Spartan unit if all the Spartan unit does is sit there (check out one of Prince_of_Macedon's commentary videos, I think he was Iberia, and his opponent Greece).
Slingers also have more ammo and I think they can shoot faster.

And they seem to be good at killing armored units, which archers always have a problem with, also they are really good against chariots.

Lets just say that slingers have better weaponry and are more effective, whereas archers are more mobile and flexible.
Archers; 1) Greather range
2) Better Attack
3) Can use flaming ammo to reduce morale
4) Can shoot overhead of infantry
Slingers 1) Armour piercing
2) More Ammo
3) Faster rate of fire
BTW, slingers excetionally good aganist chariots. Also . Many historians notes that slingers had greather range than archers. In RTR it is fixed...

in rtr i think archers are a little overpowered. Maybe its roma surrectum.
sllingers arent "inherently inferior" but i like arts better cause they can fire from behind the lines and use fire. its a matter of opinion, though.
Of these facts there cannot be any shadow of doubt: for instance, that civil society was renovated in every part by Christian institutions; that in the strength of that renewal the human race was lifted up to better things-nay, that it was brought back from death to life, and to so excellent a life that nothing more perfect had been known before, or will come to be known in the ages that have yet to be. - Pope Leo XIII
slingers are better imo but for lazy ppl who just wanna leava rchers there archers are better
they dont in rtw which ised up.
In game, slingers are pretty effective on walls. I've had them hold their own... and win... against a greater number of spearmen mercs. Their slingers, my spears. That was embarassing. The slingers kept killing the several first ranks of spears, and the spears could never quite engage.
In real life slingers are mcuh better, but archers are still etter without a doubt - some people quite like to use them though

I use slingers against armored units, I find them quite effective in that regard. Also, use them as a skirmishing unit. They work wonders on heavy infantry.
Archers can kill your own men with friendly fire if misplaced and overlapping units, slingers will hit your troops if they are in front of them as do ballista and scorpions. Unless they are on elevated ground behind the troops in front of them.

Slingers are also more effective against horse archers, even if these are using the infamous cantabrian circle.
Slingers have smaller range and do smaller damage but if you make good use of them they can be a welcome asset in your army.
Also don't forget that just attacking from behind and flanks with you skirmish units you can do real damage to the enemy.Don't use or don't let them fire (use the "manual" command instead of "fire at will" one) directly when the enemy infantry is charging...Let them charging, keep them "locked" there with some infantry units and ...move your skirmisher quickly in their flanks or rear and ...commence the mayhem !!!![]()
