Corporate Diversity policies , a waste of space
As the good people of TWC may recognise I respect and indeed promote diversity in all its forms.
But I have to say that the way large organisations in the UK promote a corporate "vision" of diversity annoys me, you've no doubt seen it, friendly ethnic or female faces fronting websites and leaflets and what have you. Yet are failing miserably to do their basic statutory duties.
For example, it is nearly 40 years since the Equal Pay Act was implemented in the UK, and this was followed by the Single Status Agreement (SSA) in 1997, between local government and trade unions to rectify salary discrepancies between men and women. to challenge the fact that then, women were still paid, on average, a 17% less than men for full-time work and 36% less for part-time work. But 10 years on this happens.
Another example, despite having three years to review their Race Equality Schemes, as required by law,and dedicated, highly paid staff to implement them, 15 Civil Service Departments failed the deadline to implement schemes or produced revised schemes that were so poor as to be laughable.
And from personal experience, I heard evidence from a very senior retail manager in a tribunal. He boasted that his employer had an exemplary diversity and equality policy at some length, before he went on to describe what he thought of the character of the claimant and why she had to be dismissed. His testimony was effectively destroyed when I asked him why his assessment was at variance with that of his junior and middle managers. He literally could not give an answer. I guess no amount of worthy diversity dialogue could get away from the fact that I was only interested in his actions.
I say less of the corporate talk of how organisations embrace diversity. What people want is that managers and policy makers treat people fairly and equally and that they get a good kicking if they don't.
Do you think people should understand other cultures or should understand their employment rights?
