Default Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3

Redwood City, Calif., February 14, 2008 – After a seven-year hiatus, Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced the return of Red Alert, one of the most beloved and best-selling real time strategy (RTS) series of all time. Command & Conquer™: Red Alert™ 3, for the PC, Xbox 360TM video game and entertainment system and the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, takes players on an epic adventure to a breathtaking alternate future spawned by time travel run amok . Developed by EA Los Angeles, Red Alert 3 breaks new ground in the RTS genre, featuring a fully co-operative campaign while bringing back the series’ light-hearted style and classic, action-oriented gameplay.

“The Red Alert games are known for challenging hardcore strategy gamers with depth, variety, and innovative gameplay. But they also belong to that rare breed of games that can draw in more casual players with their over-the-top stories, instantly accessible mechanics, and straight-to-the-fun design,” said Mike Verdu, General Manager of EALA. “With Red Alert 3, our team is continuing that proud tradition by introducing genre-first features like co-operative campaign play, which rewards veterans and casual players alike. In Red Alert 3, friends and family can always have your back!”

“It’s been too long.” said Chris Corry, Executive Producer at EALA. “Fans have been waiting for a new Red Alert game for seven years, and we’re working hard to ensure its well worth the wait. The team is staying true to the series’ roots while adding new elements like a co-operatively played story-driven campaign, an astounding new faction that will shake-up the Red Alert universe as we know it, and units that will help make Red Alert 3 everything our fans have been waiting for. And by bringing naval combat into the heart of the game design, we’re transporting that fast, fun and fluid C&C gameplay to the high-seas in ways that you’ve never seen before.”

In Red Alert 3, the desperate leadership of a doomed Soviet Union travels back in time to change history and restore the glory of Mother Russia. The time travel mission goes awry, creating an alternate timeline where technology has followed an entirely different evolution, a new superpower has been thrust on to the world stage, and World War III is raging. The Empire of the Rising Sun has risen in the East, making World War III a three-way struggle between the Soviets, the Allies, and the Empire with armies fielding wacky and wonderful weapons and technologies like Tesla coils, heavily armed War Blimps, teleportation, armored bears, intelligent dolphins, floating island fortresses, and transforming tanks.

Red Alert 3 asks the question “What If?” What if every bizarre research project and technology experiment for the last 70 years had actually borne fruit? What if the Philadelphia Experiment, time travel theory, teleportation, invisibility, Tesla technology, and a hundred other intriguing research projects had all paid off and gone mainstream? What if the Soviet Union survived and thrived; what would it look like 10 years in the future? What if the Japanese Empire had never fallen and instead became the ultimate high-tech military superpower? The end result is an imaginative and playful vision of an alternate future filled with possibility.

    From the PCGuru magazine article.
    - Every unit has secondary functions. The allied tank for instance is able to concentrate radar beams to be used as a scouting unit.
    - Altough not visible on the screens, there's going to be massive damaging in RA3, with weapons carving colossal craters into the ground.
    - Most structures are placeable on water for extra cost.
    - Ships can only leave shore on sand, so its crucial to defend these areas.
    - The article writer claims that the impressive graphics don't shine through the screens. In his opinion, graphics are much better compared to CnC3, and he's especially flabbergasted by the animations.
    - The Russians have a submarine called the 'Akula' which isn't simply deadly against ships, but is able to train divers as well.
    - The Bullfrog transport ship doesn't have to set shore, its able to 'shoot' out the units it's carrying
    - The Japanese Seawing bomber is able to transform into a submarine simply by falling into the water.
    - Sea battles will be crucial in this game.
    - The Japanese enroll a water-affin tank called 'Tsunami', which is both heavily armoured and powerful, and slower on land than in water.
    - The campaign can be co-operatively played with a friend from start to finish. If there's no one to play it with, you can choose between an array of AI allies to fight the war.
    - StarCraft2's lead designer worked on RA3 before he went to Blizzard.
    - Gameplay will be much slower, an aspect, along with the beta, that the team concluded from TW. The writer confirms this slowdown.
    - Enemy soldiers freeze upon Allied dogs barking.
    - The Mobile V4 is able to swim as well, but its main draw points is the precise and area-effective attack.
    - The Russians submarine, the Stingray Nasad, sports tesla-launchers, and is a rather small, but fast unit.
    - The writer praises the smooth animations, explosion effects and water in general again and again, its crazy!
    - Live-action FMVs are back mixed with CGI and outdoor scenes!
    - The writer holds that RA3 wont be as good as SC2, but damn close, and even better than RA2.
    - No Yuri.
    - Atmosphere is top notch.
    - Expansion pack is already planned.

    From C&C community manager APOC.
-The Soviets and Allies have airfields.
-There will be Tanya. What is Red Alert without Tanya, the Soviets, the Allies, Tesla everything, and Kirovs...and dogs.
-Red Alert 3 right now is running off of SAGE and the visuals you see are at a minimum on par with C&C 3. We're doing a lot of enhancements to effects, water, lighting, etc that you can't see fully in these screenshots just yet.
-Red Alert 3 has been in development for a while, our focus first and foremost was on building all of our units to a 1.0 stage so we can test multiplayer VERY early, which we can now. We're already balancing.
-Sub-factions, while cool, are not planned right now and not something you should expect for Red Alert 3.

Awesome. Red Alert is definitely the best part of the C&C universe.

Why are they making another version of that ****** ass game? Every CnC game ever made my eyes bleed out of sheer agony. How did this series ever get popular?

Edit: Also PC Lamer? I was also hoping they had such down. That mag sucked hard.

Why do they put the R's backwards in 'Red Alert'?

    It pisses me off.

Also, why would the Communist's in red alert use hot, scantily clad women for soldiers?

    Pfft.

I don’t want to put a downer on it but remember this is being made by EA so don’t expect anything ground breaking. Hopefully the EA chief will follow up on his comments about hurting the industry, and RA3 will be a RTS game that we will come to love and care for.

Well Red Alert 2 was way better then Red Alert 1 so there is a chance that RA3 will be good.

Still wondering why people like these games? CnC 1 was horrible. CnC Tiberian Sun was horrible. Red Alert 1 was atrocious. Red Alert 2 was barely better. No idea why I even tried playing after CnC 1.

Red Alert 2 was the most colourful and perfectly balanced RTS of its kind and hasn't been matched on those points. I salute RA3 and want to go to bed with it.

Most balanced? Red Alert 2 was the least balanced RTS I have ever played. Beyond the tactical battles of RTW and M2TW that is.

Nothing about RA2 was balanced. It was nothing but cool units running around doing cool things with loads of clicking.

You appear to be thinking of Warcraft 3 or something. The inter-relation of anti-air, air, surface, submarine, infantry and armour weapons and defences and special attacks im RA2 is flawless. If that was genuinely the sense you got from the game then you cannot have actually experimented with the available tactical options - certainly you would have been crushed with ease by any half-decent player in a multiplayer round.

And yes, I wanted to do that Zofia-in-latex chick too.

EDIT: Updated story and Japaense, Soviet units. Some of this stuff sounds pretty weird...

Although I still haven't around to buying C&C3, I'm reasonably excited about this. There are screenshots and info floating around for those that care to find it... PC Gamer forums good place.

    Factions:

    Alliance
    Soviets
    Japan

    Gameplay:

    Apparently slower than RA2

Increased role of Naval warfare (Screenshots show aquatic versions of what I would guess are Allied power plants, repair depot and war factory, and allied ship capable of travelling on land)

    Increased role for infantry

Story Campaign can be played in co-op (Now THAT's interesting)

Economy apparently still based on the rather silly ore.

    Two superweapons per faction.

Special abilities for lots of units apparently.

    Story:

It is being suggested in various quarters that the story is going to reforge the link between the Tiberium and Red Alert universes.

The actual time this is supposed to taking place in, or how the Allies manage to let the Soviets get the drop on them *again* despite defeating them twice already (EA cash cow law of international relations...) is anyone's guess.

Update: It has been rumoured that the story follows a USSR victory using a time machine, that results in Japan becoming a major empire.

Suposedly 190 minutes of 'comedic' cutscenes.

    Art style:

Very reminiscent of RA2, especially the enivornments. If I was to guess a time, I would say 80s.

    Expansion pack:

It has been suggested that this will include Yuri. Seems a bit premature.

    Allies:

    High-tech faction.

Art Style: Blocky, high tech, very reminiscent of UEF in Supreme Commander. Allied Logo from RA2 appears unchanged.

    Units:
MBT with two front tracks and single rear track, or at least thinner rear (Screenshot)
Speed boat that appears to be hydrafoil (Screenshot)
Ship that can travel on land (Screenshot)
Fighter Aircraft (Possibly two different types in screenshot)
    Bomber Aircraft (Screenshot)
Attack dogs (Apparently can stun infantry with it's bark, sounds a bit lame to me)
    Snipers mentioned
Large mystery unit, possibly MCV but doesn't really look it to me. Maybe a return of the battle fortress?
    Mirage-like tank mentioned

    Other:

I heard mention that Prism weapons *won't* be returning. Which seems odd.

    Structures:
Most production structures visible, but no defenses seen as yet.
Nothing of note here other than aquatic construction of a number of buildings
What I would guess is the war factory seems to have radar on it, I wonder if it doubles as a robot control centre as we saw in Yuri's revenge?

    Soviets:

    Horde faction.

Art Style: A lot more streamlined than the blocky over the top approach of RA2, more reminiscent of real world Soviet/Russian tech.

    Units:

    Cyberbear-paratroopers (!?)
    Tesla Troopers (Screenshot)
    Large twin barrelled tank (Screenshot)
    Tesla speed boat (Screenshot)
SmallAnti Aircraft Naval vessel of some kind (Screenshot, odd looking)
    Kirov (Concept art, but confirmed)
    V4 Rocket (Confirmed)
    Tesla Tank (Concept art...)
Nifty streamlined looking sub (Concept art...)
Machine gunner (Seems to have some kind of special ability that I don't quite understand)

I would hazard a guess at a female Soviet sniper hero character as well...

    Structures:
    Tesla Coil
Unknown production building appears to be armed (I recall old RA2 concept art had armed war factory)
Power plant appears to be conventional, rather than Tesla. Notably smaller than Allied power plant.

    Japan:
    Very little known

    Units:
    Samurais with laser sabers (!?)
Plasma armed soldiers with shield and/or 'digging' ability
Air unit that can change into submarine mentioned
    'Tsunami' tank

    Thoughts:

Personally, I prefer if the storylines weren't linked, the divergence is too great and Petroglyph people pretty much confirmed that the Red Alert -> Tiberium timeline isn't the same as the Red Alert -> Red Alert 2 timeline. Unfortunately the explanation of this was supposed to be in a game that will never be made (Tiberian Incursion).

I hope the Japanese are an interesting "Imperial Japan" type with an interesting role in the story rather than just also-rans with the Allies. Would be nicely reminiscent of alternative WW2 feel of the original (despite it being full of 80s tech)

I like the appearance of the ship capable of travelling on land. I really hope this means the Soviets will get some of the never-realised land-ship units that were concepts for both RA2 and the abortive Russian faction in Generals.

    Allies *really* feel like UEF.

    I really hope there's a single player campaign-map/strategic element.

Overall, I would say the game feels very much like RA2 reimagined, with some of the stuff that was meant to be in but never was.

C&C and Red Alert are separate

That headline above appears in the latest edition of UK magazine PC Zone. They have a big spread on Red Alert 3, and according to the article, the C&C universe and Red Alert universe are NOT related. Here's a quote from Chris Corry, exec producer on Red Alert 3.
There's no relationship between the two universes. Westwood - Louis Castle and Brett Sperry - had an intention that they would exist in the same universe, which is why in RA1 Kane appears. But Louis Castle has done interviews which he said was a 'failed experiment'!"
The Red Alert dev team went on to say the following...
We have no plans to bring them together. C&C is all about Kane, and Tiberium being the black gold and a corrupting influence - heavy themes and really different in tone to Red Alert. If you tried to force the two together, you'd just have a bit of a mess.

Quite a franchise indeed, according to Wiki the first Red Alert has sold over 12 million units.
