Icon3 What do you think of this quote?

    Read this:

"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
    -Mahatma Gandhi

What do you think of this quote by Gandhi? For clarification, Gandhi was never a Christian, but I think it's very true, there are so many Christians like this. Christians should strive to be as Christlike as possible in their actions and thoughts. Do any other Christians here agree?

Well, of course it's true. How on earth can Cortes possibly apologize for his genocidal rampage through Central America?

Gandhi was, and is right. He's been right for a long time.

He should look in the mirror. During his life he made comments so abjectly racist it would put stormfront to shame.

Most humans do not live up to the ideals and beliefs they claim to represent. Regardless of what religion they follow.

Christianity is centered around salvation, not morality, so it is to be expected that Christians will not be beacons of morality. The religion is simply not designed that way.

Racism is intrinsic to the Indian caste system. Gandhi's views about blacks simply coincide with everything he was taught. Not to excuse his beliefs, but one must remember their context.

I think this is especially true of Christianity, in a sense. The eternal rewards of heaven are promised to Christians, whether they are moral or not. I suppose trying to emulate Christ is an admirable goal, if you are a Christian, but it's not as much of a theological problem as it is in some other religions.

That is, I'm sorry, Scorch, the only time in which you have completely and totally wrong.

Really? "For all have sinned and all fall short of the glory of God"?

All. You could be the most immoral bastard ever, but if you accept Jesus as your saviour you are promised that you'll receive the eternal rewards of Heaven. How exactly am I wrong?

Because faith without works is dead. Therefore, we must live our faith, and that entails in living how Jesus commanded us. Jesus made this quite clear, and for those of you who disagree, there's Paul to clarify this point AGAIN.

    Matthew 26: 27-28

"Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, 'Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many many for the forgiveness of sins."
    John 3: 16

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
    John 3: 19-21

"This is the verdict; Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth and comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
    John 14: 6

"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
    John 20: 22-23

And with that he breathed on them and said; 'Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."
My head is spinning and quoting scripture is getting tiring...Accept Jesus as your savior and you shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Also any Christian can forgive people of their sins.

It really would have been a bad mystery cult if you had to do more than just accept the teachings of one man to get into heaven.

    I agree with Scorch.

^ Not only should we be concerned with our salvations, and the salvations of others, we should also be Christlike in our actions, and live righteous lives. That is technically impossible, since we all are sinners, but we should try.

I understand morality is part of Christianity, but as I said, Christianity is not centered on it. The focus is on salvation.

Buddhism would be an example of a religion where the focus is not on salvation, but rather on morality. There is a clear difference.

He's right that's for sure. I think the morals presented in the bible are mostly fantastic, but like any religion, the institutions don't work as well.

On the concept of of being christ-like, there are some things about him that I didn't like as opposed to the things he preaches; I always found him a bit arrogant. Anyway, I'd be surprised if any of you could do the things the Jesus supposedly did?

I beg to differ, most of the morals presented are absolutely disgusting. Jesus' golden rule is good, but every culture has a variation of it.

Agree what Gandhi said. Strange though, I think there are only a few religious organizations close to their ideology. Personally I view the first generation of Order of St.John is one of organization that close to Christian teaching.

    Protestant... blah.

Jesus himself preached love and tolerance, but these were lost in translation by his hateful churches and, subsequently, led to the persecutions of Jews and Muslims out of nothing more then a belief of superiority, and fanaticism.
