It is not reallly necessary, but it is definitely worth doing. Patches fix some significant issues from retail.
So I would recommend doing it.

thanks guys, is there a need to do all the patches in order, or can i just do the latest one?
The patches are put out by the game manufacturer, and take care of a lot of bugs, which many claim made the game nearly unplayable. I don't know that I would go that far; but the download and install time will be paid back to you many times over, by not having to put up with quirky game behavior.
Patch directly to 1.2 if you have M2TW.
Patch to 1.2, first, and then patch to 1.3 if you have M2TW + Kingdoms.
You can find the free patches doing a Google search on M2TW and patches. Or perhaps someone here will give you a link.
Edit: I see Monsieur Alphonse's post, below, which reminds me that I failed to emphasize a good point: Do NOT install patch 1.1

Just the latest, it has all previous changes on it too.
You need patch 1.2.
Patch 1.3 is the latest but does only make M2TW compatible with Kingdoms. Skip patch 1.1 because if you install patch 1.2 over 1.1 it can cause some problems.
Welcome
edit: Noble Nick beat me.
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.
Tosa will be missed.
Sorry for trying to hijack this thread but what issues it can cause ? Because if I recall correctly, I did just that when installing M2 a long time ago.Skip patch 1.1 because if you install patch 1.2 over 1.1 it can cause some problems.

According to the readme file of patch 1.2 you should use patch 1.2 with a clean install of M2TW. About 90% of the people that didn't do that and patched 1.1 to 1.2 got problems like CTD's etc. If you have done it and don't have any problems then don't worry about it. Maybe you are one of the lucky ten percent.![]()

Patches are good. There's player fix type stuff here in the mods section that are also good to go on top of the patches, if you're noticing a problem that one of the player fixes addresses.
A good example is the player made patch for the Americas campaign in Kingdoms.
This forum is a good place to read around on, not just in this main section, but in the mods sections too. Lots of good stuff.
Oh, and dont for get to give some mods a try. There's some fantastic work done by players that really puts a shine on M2:TW.
I just got kingdoms and I am having a problem loading it. The screen freezes on me. What could be the problem?
Hold on, did you allready have Kingdoms when you installed the 1.2 patch?
If you install Kingdoms, the main game will automatically get patched to 1.3, so you should not have to do it yourself.
Grand Campaign: Extended - Adding Kingdoms content to the Grand Campaign.
I have not installed any patches yet, and whats up with the Stainless Steel patch?
