stuggleing to make ends meat is always a bit of exageration, ive met people who say they fall into that group but can afford to waste money on nights out. but there are some people like this, i mean no one in the west can complain about there wealth when you think what people in africa have etc. but that sad there are millions of people who do struggle, cant afford health insurance (if we are talking just about the american middle class), etc and so on.

the UK is different though lozz, the average wage hasn't changed (excluding inflation) since before thatcher yet the cost of living has dramatically ncreased. we have a situation where many people are living at home untill their late 20s because houses are too expensive and rising utility bills are making peoples lives a misery.

The people behind that video are suffering from a severe lack of Intelligence and rationality. Of course, its not the huge leaps in technology production that made cellphones and cars affordable and more efficient, in fact it has NOTHING to do with that. Nothing at all.

When your comparing cost statistics, from 1900 and 2007, it should dawn on you that you might want to compare more recent statistics to form an accurate study on the matter.
The video is complete crap, want proof that the cost of living is going up ? Not so long ago a one income family could live a comfortable surburban lifestyle. But now, its impossible without two incomes.

Uh, I think that is indirectly covered in the video, all kinds of items are getting cheaper over time, or becoming better for the same cost.
To give you a personal example, I bought a 100mhz Pentium in 1997 (I think) for about $1000 and I have bought three news cumputers since. In each case I spent just about a $1000, yet in each case I got a far more powerful machine for the same money. (actually less if you figure in inflation)
The point of the video is that the middle class of today lives a far wealthier lifestyle than one twenty years ago. If you wanted to live a 1988 lifestyle today, you could do it quite easily on one income.The video is complete crap, want proof that the cost of living is going up ? I think we are all trying to figure out your point.
Again, did you watch the video? It doesn't have to take inflation into account because it measures goods in hours worked rather than dollars.Yet dose it ake into account such thing like Inrflation?
But anyway, I am still suspicious about the video.
How much of those luxury items that can apparently be afforded by the middle class are actually things they can afford, and how much of it contributes to the massive household debt in America.

Euros still maintain a massive time cost that that is a massive rarity even though it's a cute foot note. You have to take those euros i the middle of rush hour in NY to your local bank to exchange them for more or less a 45 cent gain IF you trade with that money ie buy across borders. Not really worth it when you consider it's the same amount of wealth just less units here in the US. Infact it's irrational unless they are trying to tap into the tourist market that is growing given exchange rates.The dollar's purchasing power has been steadily falling.
