What compels you to be moral?

Here is a question: what exactly compels you to be moral? Do you consider yourself to be moral? Why are you moral, and how are you moral?

I am motivated to be a moral person because ever since childhood, I have been taught the Scriptures from the Bible. Perhaps the most recognizable moral code from the Bible is the Ten Commandments. I am also compelled to try living a moral lifestyle because of my family, especially my parents, who are great influences. Most importantly, I'm compelled to live a moral life because the Lord Jesus Christ calls upon believers to do good works and to keep a righteous attitude on all that we go through. I try to go out of my way and time to help people, and I try to always be polite when speaking to people. I of course have my negative side, but thankfully, that side rarely reveals itself.

So this is a little about me.

It's taken me a long time to find where my ethics and morals lie, and I'm compelled to follow them because it's what sits right in my mind - and what I feel is the best way of conducting one's self. Loyalty to family and friends, do not hold grudges for long or do things out of spite, don't hold someone as an unforgivable enemy, never infringe on another's rights, give people credit when it is due and always try and find what will cause the greatest good in any situation, because sometimes the end does justify the means, and to give respect to those who earn it.

I can't deny that my Catholic upbringing has an effect on my morals, especially my actions towards people who harm me, but most of it has been discover through self reflection. The only true thing that motivates me is that this is what I am and I should act as I am, and through that I hope to make the world better by the time I leave than when I entered it.

I'm moral because I want to be. I feel that I should treat people the same way I want to be treated, and that usually works out to be in line with everyone's moral code.

A few things are different, like how I worship an Idol made of gold, and how I don't think torture is all that bad (mainly because they broke my moral code and don't fall within the sphere of 'human' anymore)

I do.

I do not act moral because some religious edicts demand. Actually, some of the things I do are very immoral on religious standpoint(s).

When I die, if I end up before some judge I will just say that I lived my life to my best ability. If that is not enough, well... Didn't want to go to paradise anyway, since it clearly is filled with narrowminded stuckups.

I am moral because it benefits everyone as a whole more than if I was immoral when I would only be helping myself. After all, in nature, altruistic groups of animals tend to be more successful than a group of selfish individuals.
