Parents should never be allowed to let such a procedure take place on their child. Anybody that wishes to have a sex change or feels out of place in their gender should have to at least wait until they are 18 so that it can be assured that the person is not just going through a phase, but truly is, essentially, a female trapped in a male body or vice versa. The fact that the parents allowed this happen constitutes child abuse in my eyes.

I saw a PBS special on this. (yeah i know...) Anyway, it was about people that were born one gender that are chamically wired to to think they are the opposite sex. In other words, they have the mind of one sex and the body of another.

They're a genotypic male. Leaving it at that is simplifying it to a immense degree. Gender identity is incredibly complex and is not particularly well understood, but may be due, for example, to maternal hormonal levels during gestation. Not to mention there are a number of receptor/enzymatic deficiencies (e.g. androgen insensitivity, 5-alpha reductase deficiency) in which a genotypic male may have female sexual characteristics but still retain a male gender identity (or not).

Geez when I was 3-4 years old I wasn't also pretty much sure whether I was a boy or a girl,because stupid other kids asked me around all the time:
Are you a boy or a girl? due to my hair being a bit long,and because I was a pretty boy.Also I recall thinking having to put up with pregnancy and was worrying about how to cope it in the future when I grow up.. Then my mother explained to me that men don't get pregnant only women do,and I was relieved
So speaking in the light of this I believe these kind of wrong assumptions indeed happen.The parents should teach the poor boy what he really is.There is probably a communication problem between them and the kid

I have no problem with transgenderism, If that's how someone feels then fine. But at this stage in a kids life things are all pretty confused and there's a lot of weird ideas kids can get from snippets of info they've been told.

That sounds like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad saying that there are no homosexuals in Iran. It's not that they didn't exist, they were just repressed and persecuted. One consequence of our overpopulation is that 'minorities' are now in the millions and can successfully draw their strength from numbers. So more attempts for tolerance and more people in the mainstream know of these once downplayed problems.
However, in this case, I must agree that 8 is too young an age to have any sort of sex change. How much ever I hate ageism like Maximillian, simple odds dictate that the kid doesn't have the experience to make this sort of decision. It is true that some 8 year olds are more intelligent than a 40 year old, its just highly unlikely.
Most important though, is the fact that this is not a news report but rather an editorial. This article is just teeming with bias and I can help but wonder how much information is being withheld. not all love is sexual, maximilian. i've enjoyed romantic friendships with female friends b4 (much to the chagrin of my g/f) and platonic fraternal love with my mates, not to mention a filial love for my parents and family. All governed my emotional, spiritual, and intellectual attraction.

i even remember discussing with a friend at 13 over the prospects of getting a sex change-we were both curious about what it'd be like to be a girl, not beuz we felt like girls inside.
THe thing is, these are all transitory phases in the kid's life.

Thanatos right this second if some guy captured you and transformed you into a girl, would you be okay with it?, I am going to assume you would not, since you're mind would stay the same. It is very much the same issue with kids even if they where instead born in that body to begin with.
Of course we can all agree that at 8 years old it simply is not reliable to let a surgeon start chopping off his goods quite yet.
