Whats your favorite unit?

Hi Everyone

So what better way then to start off with a post about the best part of the game the, units . What I want to know is, if you could make a faction from any Total War Era or even from any point in history* with any five units what would they be? (+ your average Spearmen, Peasants and Crossbowmen ect...)

*These being Non-Gunpowder units and before the 18th century*

My main battle line would be Spartan hoplites, my archers would be Scots Guard, my cavalry would be Gothic Knights and scythe chariots, and I would use Urban Cohorts as versatile flanking or flank/rear defense troops.

I would have to say my favorite units would be Retinue Longbowmen! Yup... i like there pikes, armor, range, melee for a range unit, and of course lighting their deadly arrows on fire! Yup... Retinue Longbowmen...

Genoesse Crosswbows are bar far my favorite and make milan my favorite faction. But I like the Armoured Swordsmen and Fueldal Knights, so if I could combine them this would be my stack formation. The crossbows would rain hell on any troops moving near me. Once they're close enough, I'd collapse the Armoured swordsmen on they're frontlines, and send the fuedal knights to deal with any archers on they're side, and then to charge the rear of the army.

Sacred Band infantry in the front line. Urban Cohorts in the second line. Retinue Longbowmen and Gothic Knights in support. War Dogs to hit the flanks and Screeching Women for good measure.

Spartans for the main line, Retinue Longbowmen behind them (if only they shot fast enough), Battle Ninja squads lurking around, Polish Guard cavalry as shock troops and Norse War Clerics as heavy cavy killers (those 10/19 dudes with AP are great against any cavy, generals included).

Spartans are overrated, rather give me eb´s seleucid hellenic heavy spearman on the front, longbowmen, khwarezm guard lancers, dism gothic knights and some dism chiv knights.

At the moment (since I'm playing them), I'll go with the Scottish Border Horse. Cheap as hell, fast as hell, with a surprisingly strong charge. Manage them well and you can decimate enemy archers, and even disrupt enemy heavy infantry.

DISMOUNTED zweihanders? i didn't know there was a mounted one.

but i would go with just reg. longbowmen, since they come much quicker, strategos for fast shock cav. and the armored swordsmen and armored sergeants for holding the line.

BTW i'm also using the normal font and size. isn't it great to be a conformist?

eh meant gothic knights, way better as a non cav unit anyway, but I just like the name zweihander

If prices and upkeep where kept the same, would go with:

Teutonic Knights
Mongol Heavy Archer (this is an HA unit)
Retinue Longbows
Armored Elephants (Carthage, RTW)
Venetian Heavy Infantry

ah yes the elephants, always nice. i wish the timurids had had a reg. shock elephant unit.

i've never used the dis. gothic knights before. they dont exist in the vanilla grand camp. right?

the dism gothic knights can easily be modded in tho and I didnt played vanilla that long anyway. Only thing is, is that they look a slight bit gay, I would rather swap their skin with the zweihander one. And it's always nice to see a fellow wrestling fan

well yeah all u gotta do is mod the EDB to get them in. and swapping the skin would be harder, but prolly not too much.

Yes Mikeb has a good point. The Scottish Border Horse have got to be the most under rated unit. With some upgrades and experience they can smack the Mongols nicely because they are so fast. However, they are plain looking. CA should have made the horses mauve or puce with sparkly hooves.

dont the border horses use the same mount as the hibilars? they r slightly stronger tho on attack and defense, but i think the mounted sergeants would be just as good. none of them r fast ponies.
