What the hell were the filmmakers thinking when they decided to do without German accents. Ideally this movie should have been done in German and then subtitled. But methinks learning German might be a few dozen IQ points above Tommy boys capability.

To hell with the accents, it should be in German or in proper English.

It's never going to be like "Downfall". I'll hold judgment until I have seen the movie. In saying that I have always thought that the Germans are the best at acting as Germans (eg Das Boot).

Ze Germans don't do comedy. So of course it had to be British actors otherwise it would end up being a documentary.

Ahem, we do a lot of comedy, even if you don't understand anything.

Why? Do you think that Stauffenberg actually spoke accented english all the time?
Normal English or German, that would be the way to go. And If you want the latter, just get the german DVD version when its out and watch it with english subtitles (The english language version is usually included on german DVDs).

Doesn't look to bad, the main actor is obviously a very bad move. Its a shame Hollywood had a go at this before the Germans, if this is half as good as Der Untergang I will be thrilled, but chances are that it won't come near it. I support the claim that Germans are the best at playing Germans.

Ed, As for the accents I prefer proper English (RP, not AE, but still), If you are not doing it in Germans, which would obviously be preferable, make the people speak properly and not some crappy cheesy American-German. Surprisingly, Germans have a tendency to speak excellent and quite fluent German, and if one is to replace German with English they should be quite good at speaking that as well.

Ever since I first heard of this movie I couldn't for the life of me understand why they went with Tom Cruise and other English speaking actors..

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but didn't Der Untergang also open in English theatres under the name Downfall? I don't know how much of a succes it was, but I went to see it at my local cinema and thought it was brilliant. I highly doubt an English speaking actor could've done Adolf Hitler any justice.. (That almost sounds like I'm trying to defend the man, but what I'm trying to say is that an English speaking Hitler would've been unrealistic and therefore distracting)..

I fear the same thing will be the case here..

If you want to see this story in German, there's a great version of it called Stauffenberg, featuring renowned German actor Sebastian Koch as Oberst Stauffenberg.. Personally, I would recommend this movie over the melodrama that Valkryrie promises to be..

With Cruise plotting and planning I kinda have to think of Mission Impossible more than anything else. I'm thinking that would make for a more amusing movie too.

I don't think it really matters if he has an accent or not. I have seen all of Tom Cruise's movies, and I have never ever been disappointed in any of them (except for that ridiculous Austin Powers: Gold Member movie he appeared in for a few seconds).

I'm one of those people who didn't care about the British-accented Soviets in "Enemy at the Gates" or Kevin Costner's Yankee accent in "Prince of Thieves."

Tom Cruise, despite his occasional bouts of insanity, is one of the most charismatic actors ever to hit the bigscreen. And when that new movie debuts, his star power will lure everyone out (including non-History buffs) to go see this movie.

Generally, foreigners played by Americans or British people are done in British accents. Some people simply can't do British accents, or do them well enough. It's nothing to be ashamed about, and you shouldn't bash someone for their inability to do a proper British or German accent, and stick with one they know.

Now, just because Tom Cruise is weird, and a Scientologist, does not invalidate him as an actor. He is a very, very good actor, and most movies he is in are very entertaining, thrilling, and overall excellent movies. I've never been disappointed by the films he's been in, except War of the Worlds, but that was Dakota Fanning's fault. I project this movie to be a good film, shedding light on the little-known fact of the German military's resistance to the Nazi regime.

Jeez...I can't believe I'm being the Chris Crocker for Tom Cruise here...

Maybe they should rack Tom Cruise a bit. Stauffenberg was up to 1.85 metres tall, whereas Cruise is less than 1.70. Just another reason why I'll probably ignore this movie.

Having Stauffenberg speak english with a german accent would not make the movie more authentic. It's not like Stauffenberg spoke german with an english accent. A german accent is not a substitute for actually speaking german.
