Default Whats the big deal about gay marriage?

Honestly, I fail to see the problem. I am not gay, nor do I plan on becomming one, yet it seems like so many people think that because they are not gay the instantly means the marriage is messed up, even if you don't like the ethics of it leave it alone and don't do it if you do not want to, if you believe being gay means you go to hell or whatever, are you going to hell because the guy down the street is gay and married with someone who makes him happy? Responses, and someone tell me why this is even an issue, I mean doesn't the world have better things to worry about?

Well personally, I find it immoral and it degrades our country if we allow it. I get disgusted everytime I see two dudes like that. Mostly its because marriage is seen as a union between a man and woman, that's how its always been. Homosexuality isn't accepted still by many people, I don't hate the people but that lifestyle is what alot of people hates.
Its not natural but yet we condone it. But that's the main reason I wouldn't want it allowed. But what people do behind their closed doors is their busniess just don't share it with the rest of the world lol.

Hold on, you're black aren't you?

Why should people tolerate interracial marriage? Many considered that immoral. Don't touch white girls, it's unnatural!

Some *ahum* religious ppl see being gay as being unnatural - and no, nobody start to hack on this issue - and also view marriage as something holy (and thus between man-woman). Basically marriage is anyting but holy, if you live - like most of us Europeans - in a secular state marriage is nothing but a bond between 2 partners for the state, not for a church or anything else, all that matters is the state. Whether the partners are gay or straight is no issue. It should indeed not be an issue... but the world doesn't always spin the way we want it.

Everybody wake up in the the age of enlightenment and secularism for heavens sake!

Is that any reason to prohibit gay marriage? I don't think its right someone should have to drive to Vermont to get married, I don't like the idea of homosexuality, but its FREEDOM, they should be able to do what they want to.

Yeah, lets just not post pictures ok.....

So what if it grosses you out though, eek I don't like spiders (and for some reason suddenly most of the country agrees with you) so lets drop pesticide on every square inch of land and kill them! If I see two old people kiss I don't like it, and I avoid eye contact, but its not going to kill you, just like watching those films in health class.

Can't believe this issue needs to be discussed. Here in Holland it's legal for years. It's even allowed to marry more than one person.

I'm not gay myself, and yes, I don't like to witness two men kissing each other, let alone what else they do, but then again, I don't have to. So I couldn't care less about them getting married.

I don't give a **** about someone's god or religion condemning it. That's just someone's religious handicap, and therefore the problem of the one being religious, not a gay person's problem.

@KingDesra: Don't say it's not natural, tons of animals practice it, including lions and monkeys. Btw, what's so natural on building skyscrapers, flying planes etc? You are born in the wrong century. You might wanna adjust your backward views, it's 2008 you know!

There is absolutely no sound, logical reason, or ethical, moral foundation, for the preventing of same-sex marriage. It's ridiculous that some religious people, but not all, want to live in the middle-ages still and ignore modern facts: that homosexuality and bisexuality are natural aspects of human behaviour, and th behaviour of other animals, and those behaviours should not be barriers to persons want to engage into a legal contract of partnership.

As social revolutionary Bayard Rustin once said, "The barometer of where one is on human rights questions is no longer the black community, it's the gay community," and this rings true even now in the modern world. The only way all people will be free is if freedom is extended to all, not just those privileged in power.

Lol the most common excuse for this is, its just like being black. Major differences are, I don't have a choice in the matter of being black but I have a choice on what my sexual preference is. Humans aren't meant to be gay otherwise I think we'd be asexual or unisex beings but we're not. The parts of a man and woman are quite obvious on what goes where.
Stop making excuses for these people, whether this thing goes through or no is out of my han
ds just personally Idon't wanna see it in Illinois. But I don't care if it goes though because it going to happen not like I have power to say its not going to happen. Basically what I am saying humans are meant to be male and female not male and male or female with female. Gay people aren't a race either their humans like me and you so there's no such thing as an interracial marriage actually.
We aren't talking about animals, talking about us as a race of people. we were never meant to be, biology shows that. Attractions don't make you one way or the other just who you actually end up sleeping with.
Well, whatever happens my position remains the same, its unnatural, immoral, an
d just not right lol. Bottom line.

No, you don't. Most evidence leans towards sexuality being determined mainly by genes, random genetic variance, and the brain's chemical equilibria. It is not by choice whom we are emotionally, physically, and sexually attracted to.

Humans aren't meant to be gay otherwise I think we'd be asexual or unisex beings but we're not.
Humans are, by and large, bisexual by their nature. There's just different gradients of it, and our place on the scale is not chosen, but determined by genes and chemistry.

We aren't talking about animals, talking about us

    Humans are animals.

Attractions don't make you one way or the other just who you actually end up sleeping with.
No...whom your are attracted to emotionally and physically often determines who you end up ****ing.
Not the other way around. And it is by tendencies and expressed emotions, in other words, attractions, that we define human sexuality, not merely by sexual action.

[Homosexuality] is unnatural, immoral, and just not right. Bottom line.
Your ideological standpoint is repressive, tyrannical, and simply not ethical. Bottom line.

You don't have a choice in being gay dude...do some research first, and no, the Holy Evangelical Book of Pastor Archibald Leroy Smith Jr the 4th does not count =) Generally misinformation like that is spread by those types.

Well that last line about freedom sort of nullifies your argument...should I be able to kill people if I want? Stop infringing on m freedom, if I want to kill someone I should be able to.

I do see what you're getting at though, you just needed to mention something about 'victimless crimes'.

Really, when did you choose to be straight?

Think about it, in a world full of people that persecute gays why would anyone choose to be gay? Really the discrimination against gay people is very much like that against black people. I am constantly disappointed by people who have been given rights denying others theirs.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coretta_Scott_King

On April 1, 1998 at The Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, King called on the civil rights community to join in the struggle against homophobia and anti-gay bias. "Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood", King stated. "This sets the stage for further repression and violence that spread all too easily to victimize the next minority group."

In November 2003 in a speech at the opening session of the 13th annual Creating Change Conference, organized by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, King made her now famous appeal linking the Civil Rights Movement to the LGBT agenda: "I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people. ... But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King Jr. said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.' I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream, to make room at the table of brotherhood and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people."
    From the wife of MLK.

Maybe you didn't read, I don't care if they allow it that's their business, I just don't like it because of the things I stated. You can't really call me either way considering I haven't ever had sex yet. I just say that's what I am going to be all the way. Just because I love cars don't make me a mechanic some guy once said. Same thing with this, I am not bringing in christianity in this yet and I haven't. And I say these people because I am not one of them. Got a prob with that?
    Consi
dering I don't believe in evolution I don't believe we're mere animals. Temptation is never wrong but going through with it is. I said what they do behind close doors is their business I don't care. Like it or not I don't tolerate homosexuality, been trying to find many excuses to why its ok but there are none. Just because someone likes it, that makes it right? If you ever studied the reproductive system etc, you will see homosexuality was not part of our design.
    That's why st
ds are higher in the gay men then any other group because certain things don't go in certain places like you don't use a basketball to play golf, it just don't work that way. Like it or not this is fact.

Considering you don't believe in evolution, you can't really bring biology into it and then expect to be taken seriously. I get the impression you're not someone who has studied human physiology or psychology in any great capacity other than what you've learned in your (so far fairly short I'm guessing) life.

No one is saying homosexuality is 'right', but nor is it 'wrong' (except in your opinion). It really harms nor benefits anyone. Is using coloured toilet paper right or wrong? Neither. Same with homosexuality.

KingDesra, stop being brainwashed by some church or book, and start thinking for yourself. There will be a whole new world opening before you.

You don't have to search for excuses to tolerate homosexuality, or any other believe, or point of view. It's the other way around. If you can't find any excuses for NOT tolerating homosexuality, or whatever, there's is absolutely no reason not to tolerate it. That you don't practice homosexuality because of your religion, that's your 'decision'. But don't stop others in making their own.

btw: 'I don't like it' or 'I don't think it's meant to' because it's stated in some book written by people thousands of years ago, is not a good excuse.

It's no use my northern neighbour. You can't give the blind back their eyes right . He believes the word of god, the bible is more righteouss than the word of science. The fact that science has rebuked many things the bible said is of little influence. Also indeed what's with your arguments? First you don't believe in biology, then it justifies your statements. Biologists have recently discovered what probably makes one gay. We also know it is a natural thing in the animal kingdom... You seem to be oblivious to this right? We're not animals.... Tell us one difference between us and animals??? And don't say culture, technology, cause monkeys can use tools, most animals have a social life (we have friends), know hierarchy
(we have leaders), are territorial (we have property)... the only difference between us and them is that our species is the most complex in those things. We excell with our brain but suck with the rest (physically and stuff). So KingDesra, can you give me a rational argument (keeping in my mind what i typed above) why we are not animals??? and don't use any theological arguments plzzz.

Sounds like a tolerant attitude to me. And ofcourse being tolerant towards an issue does not necesarrily mean you should like it yourself.
