Yeah, maybe something to do with the animation combined with generally retarded wall fighting. I doubt such could be replicated in the field.
I thought that might be the case. Really sucks because sieges are my favourite part of the game.
Btw, is there any way to change the animation then? Kind of pointless to have a great axe if you rarely swing it.

2 handed weapons have to be avoided to use in all mods arround. When having a huge charge bonus the inflict some heavy damage though as soon they went in for 1-1 their actions are always interrupted by single handed units and so they lose....
Well I've played with Varangians and they can generally pwn a large number of ghazi type fanatics quite easily even in 3 to 1 situations. So the 2h animation can't be that bad.
Pelekryptoisomething is 2h, and varangians are probably the mercs recruited around constantinople, generally pelewhatever with slightly weaker stats. I think pelesomethings could be 'varangians' too.
ANY unit sucks on the walls. I had my Abna (sp? The Caliphate's elite spears) spearmen + Kurdish Javelinmen fighting 1 unit of saracen militia and my guys were getting owned there for about a minute.
Peleleleleke guys own! Although their def and attack could be increased a bit and they should have that inflict fear (lowers moral) to enemy and inspiries nearby troops...should be bit stronger but defenetly rare as later they were more like ceremonial unit i read and have never massed large numbers...still they need to won love fight with them and against themTheir look is just awsome!!!

The problem is that, on the walls, attacking units are harder to move than defensors...for example: I'm not going to use towers anymore!!! just when units get inside siege tower they STOP half upstairs and half downstairs...and don't do the error to give some orders...in that case they freeze eternally..!!!
I always use stairs...and you have to leave them getting up without giving them any orders till every soldier is ON the walls..!!
And finally, when they are fighting on the walls, often they don't follow your commands...they continue fighting but don't walk...
so, walls have to be fixed in some way...

I can confirm that Pelekyphoroi perform poorly on walls. Although some of them fight one handed, my 6 exp axemen (the ones your start out with in Constantinople) lost to a bunch of Peltasts and Akoulothoi Light Spearmen on the walls, they really got their asses handed to them.
Well, at least they go down looking sharp in that scale armour of theirs...
Out in the open field or in the city streets they perform very good. One unit of 3 exp Pelekyphoroi beat a unit of those medium Armenian spearmen (can't remember their name but they have this red-yellow cross on their shield on their unit card) with the Pelekyphoroi using only 2 men or so. This was in the city streets somewhere (I think it was Adana).

2H animation is just fine. They perform poorly on the wall because of delayed attack rate, which hinders them to defend properly. This was neat feature to explore, but I think it should be not used anymore. All units should be leveled for attack delay, and relay on other factors to balance the unit.
I watched those pelekyp boys closely and saw some of them using their 2h weapon as 1 hand + shield and others using it 2handed... thought this was impossible?
