MTW 2 GOLD installer: only option is C: !

Hi there,

I just received my Medieval II Gold Edition and happily started the installation routine, just to get frustrated...

Well, in a nutshell: unbelievably but still very true the installer gives me no other option than to install the game on C: ! I WILL NOT resize resize C: just to be able to install a GAME on my OS partition, which I never wanted to do in the first place. What is this? The new progressive standard of PC user dumbness assumptions? Not beeing able to grasp the concepts of partitions and directories?

Is there any workaround and/or patch available? Otherwise I will have to return the game...

Doesn't the installer allow you to chose a directory?

you would think so, but as some more web research revealed, it only lets you do so AFTER making sure you have min. 7.5 GB free disk space on C: . Then it generously lets you chose another partition to install to.

Game will be returned tomorrow. It is just no acceptable how you get slapped in the face nowadays for BUYING software [with] renegade copy protections that set off your antivirus software or refuse to be written by your optical drive, or even installers put together by the most incompetent programmers available.

Yeah I had the same problem with battlefield 2, really hacked me off. It let me change the drive after I had cleared some room on C:

that seems unusual, i've never run into that problem before. (not that i dont believe u)

but i wasn't even aware M2TW Gold had come out yet. anything different at all?

From what I have read online, and a lot more than Total War forums, you have two choices, (1) do it the installer's way or (2) throw the game away.
You're not going to return it for a refund in California.

A pet peeve I have with installers of late is when it gives you an option between a typical install and a custom install, yet the only difference between is that the custom install lets you choose a folder to install to. If the custom install already has the default path selected, and there being no other options the user needs to make, why then even have a choice between a typical and custom install. It just means two unnecessary mouse clicks a user has to make.

Hi,

well I just wanted to post some final remarks for everyone who will stumble across the same problem.

To sum it up: the Gold Edition installer will not let you advance to the point where you can decide on which directory (partition) you want to install
if you do not have min. 7.5 GB free on C:\ . If you have enough free space it will generously let you chose another place to install to.

I have taken the risk to resize C: in order to install it because I just wanted to play it too much

Anyway, you might perhaps be able to get around that if you search for setup executables in the subfolders of the 1st DVD. The one I found there looks more like something that might work, but at the moment just prompts me if I want to uninstall the game, and I don't want to do that just to find out.

If somebody finds out if that works or if that leads to a messed up installation (gold edition content ..) he or she could post here...

i can only choose C: but i'am trying to make some space for C: luckely i work in a game shop so i can get my money back!

There IS a way around this. You can still install Medieval 2: Total War Gold to the drive of your choosing without dealing with the 7.5 gig of disk space on the system drive issue. I had to experiment a bit but I found a way.

Use Windows Explorer to access the files on the first Medieval 2: Total War disk. Go to the directory m2tw/disk1. There is a setup.exe file there. Double click on it. That file runs an older version of the installer that allows you to install to whatever drive you wish without running the check on the system drive.

I had the same issue as you, but when I ran that installer, I was able to install the game to a different drive. I have run the game and it works fine.

I found a way to bypass this problem all you have to do is;
1. when you put your CD in drive go into my computer and right click on M2TW icon and click "open"
2.Select the folder named "m2tw" and double click then select the folder named "Disk 1" and open it after that just double click the setup and it will let you choose the disk you want.

To everyone reading this post in the future this is the correct method for bypassing the Gold installer.

To explain: The Gold edition installer seems to have been written without the consideration that some players may want to install to a drive other than C:\. But the good news is that the original installers from the game (both M2 and Kingdoms) are included on the discs. You will have to find the "setup.exe" files for both the original M2 and then Kingdoms yourself - a quick search by exploring the discs should be easy. Disk 1 has the M2 installer and Disk 2 has the Kingdoms installer. Run them in sequence and you should have no problems as they were originally written to work together. Good luck!

4. Launch Setup of \britannia (weighs lighter)

Don't need Update2 and Update3 as they're already installed up too 1.03.
Patch 1.05 is not on the dvd! Shame.

Ahh, just got MTW2 in a game pack of ETW+MTW2+Kingdoms for $29. Anyway, I was P.O.d too about the default C install until I read these which worked great. Thanks guys!!
