Your favorite mercenary unit?

Just wondering which mercenaries everybody uses in their army, and what your personal favorites are.
I have only one campaign going as the ERE so I can't say much about mercs in the eastern part of the map....

My own personal favorites are:
-the Italian Mercenaries you can recruit all along the Meditterenean (especially the 8 or 9 exp ones in Constantinople). I love the hammers they use to smash your enemies heads in..

-Varangians (way too obvious, but what the hell)

-Armenian Auxiliaries, the ones found in the Tarsus region with 9 exp. They make for great bowmen, something the ERE lacks.

so i totally agree with you when you tell me about Italian mercenaries with monsterhammers!!! sure, one of my favourite.

Then the Armenian-Syrian Auxilia too, they are very fine archers and can get warriors when end missiles!!!

Third the Latin Knights, ofcourse. very good heavycavalry unit.

Cammel archers. Drives visitors to the desert crazy. Let them chase ya til their tongues fall out... Italian Mercenaries, always an Ubber choice.

Varangians, Italians, Armenian archers, and Kipchak (?) horse archers/javelin mercs. These guys are really good for the price (better than turcoman horse archers). The Saracen Infantry guys are also pretty good but cost a lot.

That's about every merc available to ERE...


Kara-Khitai horse archers, mixed unit and alot of experience from the start.

But the Varangians as some people says with the 2h animation, they're pretty slow. Could be more efficient.

Amenia auxlia---can hit the enemy from the instance, and dont fear close combat...also ,it's pretty cheap...

Turkoman Tribal Cavalry: very cheap, effective, available everywhere, good pools.

As for me I try to recruit every armenian archer auxilia,italian mercs and latin khights ( with their crushing charge ) when they are availiable.

Saracen Infantry. Omani Mercs.

Turcopoles, definitely. They're so amazing. They can whoop almost every other horse archer in melee combat and have a good charge, and thus are great against infantry. Good armor too and they're fast. There's also tons of them.

Turcopoles, they really save the KoJ's ass. Bado Camel Archers, I've nearly conquered the entire Abbassid homeland with them. Omani mercs, excellent light infantry.

Those 3 golden striped black dudes you get in the islands off of arabia, they huck spears and have a sword/shield defense, very effective for medium infantry, plus they have 3 golden stripes so they fight till death.

Bado Camel Archers are the backbone if my armies invading Makura in my Indian campaign.

Armenian Auxiliary archers make up an important corps of my army, no matter the faction. They perform as medium-light infantry, and have a nice ranged attack.
They can be substituted by didebul archers but they come relatively later.

Merc Elephants... wouldn't stand a chance without them as sindh... ghazi fanatics were thebackbone of my army before the big money started to flow and last but not least hindu longbow archers... they have an amazing range!!!

and the Kevsar swordsmen(very sad that there is not text or photo for them,they have great stats)
