    Default Mods?

    Hello everyone,
I'm not new to the Total War games, been playing them since Medieval 1 came out, but I've never tried installing mods before. My question is, how simple is it really to install a mod? I tried installing Real Combat 1.3 and I'm not sure if it worked. The readme says that all I have to do is paste the files into the Data folder and it will work, but I don't notice any changes. Is there more that I have to do? Do you usually have to start a new campaign for the changes of a mod to take effect?

    Thanks
Feel free to move this to a different forum if this is the wrong place for this question.

Did you delete the map.rwm file? if not, a lot of changes will never take effect.

Forgive me... but you guys mention those things as if I know what they are...

I'm 100% new to Total War mods, and I can't find anywhere an idiot's guide to modding Medieval II...

So... what is Stainless Steel 5.1 and why do I need it? What is the map.rwm file and why do I need to delete it?

Is there somewhere on this forum... or anywhere else, mind you, where there's a "How to install Medieval II Total War mods" or something.
Sorry, need a bit of background before I know what I'm doing.

I know this is not the answer you want but installing mods takes time reading and understanding and being a little computer literate. A lot of the mods are one person grow your own people like to share with others. Installing and playing them is part of the learning curve. Jump in and and have fun. Fun is what ti is about. The worst thing you could do is have to reinstall it. If this scares you then mods aren't for you.

There is not particular way to install a mod. It depends on the mod. If you download one, there is usually either a readme file within the download, or it's posted in the thread with the download url.

Modding M2TW actually yourself (and I mean changing it yourself, not installing a mod) is not something you want to be bothered with if you don't have a lot of spare time, and/or if you don't know how to search either the internet or this forum for tips, tricks and how to's.

I don't want to be rude, but considering your last post, I doubt that searching and hunting the internet for clues, is your best of traits.

What's the name of the mod you're trying to install? That could help lots, and if we're familiar with it, we could guide you step-by-step.

I'm not computer illiterate. I download and install lots of mods for games like Bridge Commander, Half Life, Oblivion, Freespace (freepsace anymore is nothing but one big mod) etc... I even do some of my own simple modding for Bridge Commander, I just don't know Medieval's system.

But if there's no single system of modding, then it may be more difficult.

The mod I was trying to install was nothing but a bunch of .txt files, the readme said simply to paste them into the data folder and it would be up and running, but I just can't say I notice any difference in the gameplay.
If the mod is editing of combat statistics, are .txt files pasted into the data folder enough to activate the mod? Or is there something I have to edit in a configuration file or something like that so that the game will start using the info in those .txt files?

I'm trying to install real combat 1.3.

The thing that tipped me off that the mod wasn't working properly was the fact that the mod said it included Sirius Samurai's polearms mod, but I saw no difference in my polearm soldiers.

    Thanks everyone

If you don't notice any differnce, it maybe you need to add the --io.file_first switch mentioned Real Combat's first post of their thread. It's not something I can do for you from here but here are the instructions how: http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showth...=io.file_first.
    Good luck.
