Why is this being made into a movie!? Why not remake Conan(with a LOTR budget)!? Now that's a trilogy!(I know Conan has sex...but he did alot of stuff in between)

I wonder if they're going to address the whole S&M aspect to his books? I doubt it. I'm just irked that I read those monstrosities(based on the size of the books) and instead of a Swords/Sorcercy Fantasy I got Domination/Bondage Fantasy.

Wouldn't a movie about Honor Harrington appeal to a wider audience? Female protagonist. Space Opera. Military. No freaky sexual inuendo. It's got a good theme that relates to todays world: a female commander in the modern military

Did LOTR(3 of the most god awful worst movies ever made) have that much of an influence? I could understand how C.S. Lewis' books would follow. That's logical. There's even another one of those coming out(Prince Caspian) but Terry Goodkind!?

    I mean really!?

I'm just irked that all of the attention/detail/depth of those stories was spent on the...I don't know what it's called...the dominatrix breaking the main character. That's it! Everything seemed to hinge on this abnormal relationship between men and women. The absolute worst part, is it isn't even the woman he "loves" that does it! Oh no, he does this with another woman(who ends up feeling a fondness to) his "love/wife" wouldn't do that stuff(beat him) because she's a good girl.

Seriously! What type of message is this? The rest of the book/story isn't good enough to warrant a movie. The only logical inference is that the producer is a degenerate too. Or they're counting on the degenerates who like his books to go to the movies hoping to see some S&M.

He even dressed a woman(in a Middle Ages setting) in a skin tight red leather outfit! Of course she came equipped with whips/chains...

Don't get me wrong. I don't care what you and yours do, or how, in the privacy of your own house/car/where/whatever...What my complaint is about is the saturation of...strangelove in almost every media outlet there is. Just because you like to be tied up and whipped like a fool, do you have to incorporate that in your literature? Do you have to share with the world that you're a freak?

Are you tired of sex in everything?

    Sex sells. So does violence.
I don't know anything about this story, but a quick glimpse at wiki (yes, I know) gave me this gem:
"People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it’s true, or because they are afraid it might be true."
Sex and Violence (and a 'philosophical' dig at religion?) This should advertise itself, and cause lots of turmoil amongst certain corners....

They're actually planning to do a new Conan, which will supposedly stick closer to Howard's material. A Conan movie doesn't really need a LotR budget, good lord...

I like sex though, put it in everything.

The sex in Wizard's First Rule isn't there just to have sex, it serves a purpose. It is there to reveal the humanity of the torturer, the sex is not part of the torture.

Really though, sex I think is just another continuation of the dynamic of love and human emotion (while at the same time drawing a crowd for being socially acceptable soft-core porn).

It's also convenient for a story. With sex appeal, you don't have to develop a character that much to make him/her interesting. Especially to the general populace.

    Sex is overrated.

terry goodkinds books always make me want to projectile vomit. i am ashamed to say that i read all the way to the sixth book and by the fourth i was making strangely accurate bets with myself as to what would happen in each book.
if they are truly going to film this than i suggest you all prepare yourselves for something on the scale of battlefield earth if not worse.

Be careful what you wish for. If they **** up the story on the level that Battlefield Earth got ****ed up by it's movie, the story might become good.

First mistake. Go explore the fantasy section of the bookstore.

Maybe there are better fantasy series, but every book of his I enjoyed a lot. His characters act like adults,
    <snicker>

There are no adults in the series. Only pieces of cardboard cut out to look like humans that have speakers behind the mouths for which Goodkind uses as a soapbox.

the dialog doesn't seem forced, the world is "realistically" harsh, and he explains magic in ways that boggle my mind.
He doesn't explain it at all. There's no set logic for his magic. He just does whatever the hell he wants and BSes it away.

Or to subject to torture, abuse etc. How many times was Nicci beaten, raped, tortured...even when she was a "bad guy". I mean hell if they were real people Nicci would have flipped out. The entire series is nonsense and crappy storytelling, Richard magically becomes immune Kahlan touch because well he loves her! Goodkind couldnt even rise above comic book world in writing if Marvel manages to capture the impact of such a power in Rogue

Wiki article highlights the flaw with its section on themes "Goodkind portrays in his novels that individuals can remain true in the face of adversity without sacrificing their values and moral beliefs."....based on how its presented in the novel no one is unbreakable no matter what happens, no matter what horrors, backstabbing, personal injury inflicted on them. Cut them, rape them, beat them, torture them, kill those around them, place them in utterly hopeless situations constantly...but yet no one breaks. This is suppose to be realistic characters? Goodkind may as well changed Rahl's name to God.

I think it is pretty obvious that the mini-series, NOT a movie, won't show everything that Goodkind's books do. It is being created through Disney-ABC Domestic Television and ABC Studios. Disney isn't really known for excessive sex and violence.
Considering the sheer number of acts thru out the books I dont know how in the world ABC plans on turning it into a miniseries. I mean how are they going to handle the Mord'Sith (the only aspect of the books I did like)...their very nature is definitely a big no-no for tv.

Very good point and a very good thread.Personally I'm fed up with the sex scenes in the movies. At least 1 or 2 such scenes are always included in many movies.Premature.

They are mindlessly being utilized as a method to attract some viewers. And generally doesn't have anything to do with the theme of the movie..If I want to watch sex, there are tons of hardcore p movies.

I'm not tired of sex in everything but for movies yes.

It is unnecessary to feature it.No need to resort to naturalism at every opportunity if you ask me.
