Default Battle mode USED to work..

    What the title says.
I left my laptop with a battle mode set up and the game menu (exit battle..) open for the night. The laptop did not sleep, just faded the display.
Then I minimized the game in the morning (the battle mode and game menu were both still visible before I did it) to do some browsing and stuff.
When I tried to maximize it just endlessly read something from the disk (though 2gb ram was completely sufficient to keep the game in memory), so I shut it down using ctrl-f4.

Now, I can load a save game (any save, so I guess with new game it'd be the same too) in campaign map, but once I go to battle mode it crashes to desktop somewhere past it 80% loaded.

Apart from installing a reasonable operating system (Non-windows-vista, obviously), what else I could do to fix this issue?
I tried restarting the machine, but it didn't work.

    Perhaps some registry editing?

Yes, the crappiest windows thus far in all it's majesty - slow, crashes and drops stuff to swapfile while having yet a gb of memory free.

oh I was hoping to install it someday. The win2k3 I'm using looks really dull compared to vista or my previous linux (3d desktop). But it seems everyone who used vista complains about stablity and compatibility issues......

Vista sure is crappy (its mostly bloatware), but nothing yet has beat Windows 98/ME for sheer shittiness.

    Windows 3.1?

I remember having to set up a special boot deck so you could restart windows to use minimal memory but also to have CD-ROM support!

CD-ROMs were a marvelous invention - I think the most number of diskettes I had to use to install a game was about five or six.

    1. Guys you're going offtopic

    2. Comparing older operating systems to new is not very fair (yes, win98/me were bad, but since 95 was still working reasonably and soon 2000 came out, they didn't create any real damage, while vista itself was delayed and now M$ is not promising another system sooner than 2010)
