I'm trying to find a historical movie or TV show that depicts Classical Greece...you know, hoplites and such.
Troy does not count, nor does 300.
Are there any good films out there or TV series/mini series to check out?
Cheers

Cheers guys. There's not that many good ones, it seems.
Let me tell what mainly tv series/documentary I know about Classical Greece:
(in no particular order)
1. Line of Fire - disaster for Athens (about Peloponesian war when Athens looses at Sicily)
2. History's turning points - 490 b.c battle of Salamis
3. Decisive battles (using RTW engine) - Marathon 490 bc and Thermopylae 480BC
4. Lost Treasures of the Ancient World - Greece + 7 wonders of the ancient world
5. Ancient Discoveries (computing, mechanics, medicine, robotics) - great series
6. Genius - Pythagoras (documentary)
7. The true story of Alexander the Great (3pts documentary) - very well done
8. PBS Greeks - Crusible of Civilization (3pts) good old documentary
9. BBC The Truth of Troy (doc)
10. Command Decisions - Marathon (great vivid doc)
11. War and Civilization First Blood (doc; talks about hoplites a bit)
12. Engineering an Empire - Greece, awesome series
13. Lost City of Atlantis (sci-fi doc)
14. Seapower - first warships (talks in great detail about biremes and triremes)
15. Last Stand of The 300 (great new documentary)
16. Alexander Directors Cut movie (2004)
Well that's the quality stuff I know about classical Greece excluding such unhistorical movies as 300 and such.

Cheers you noble greeks![]()
“Great empires are not maintained by timidity.” ― Tacitus
If you have already seen alexander then try to get Alexander revisited: the final cut which is 30 minutes longer if you did like the movie that is
TERMINAL BOREDOM "An nescis, mi fili, quantilla prudentia regitur orbis?"
It sucked.15. Last Stand of The 300 (great new documentary)Complete cash in on 300, dozens of inaccuracies. Another reason why nobody should watch the History Channel... assuming they want history, that is.
For one its very expensive to make sword and sandal movies / tv shows.
My favourite documentaries about ancient greece are probably Michael Wood's "In the footsteps of Alexander the Great"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0272979/
and "In search of the Trojan War"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409571/
but they aren't that much about hoplites and there are no re-enactors.
The PBS documentary "The Spartans" was also quite good:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416424/
Isn't that the movie were Philipides rides to Sparta and then actually returns with the Spartans just in time to heroically save the Athenians ?Originally Posted by Prince_of_Macedon

Yeah, if we're talking documentaries, then my absolute favorite one is In the Footsteps of Alexander. It's a very spiritual documentary if you're a fan of Alexander.
So here are my favorite documentaries (I already listed my favorite movies):
- In the Footsteps of Alexander
- Alexander the Great & the Catapult (from Man, Moment and Machine)
- The True Story of Alexander the Great (I'm glad someone mentioned this already)
- The Real Olympics (a PBS special on the Ancient Olympics)
- The Spartans (another PBS special)
Last Stand of the 300 could've been good, but the narrator is way too annoying. The visuals are gorgeous though. Very artistic.
Yeah, that's the one. The Film Crew (former Mystery Science Theater actors) did commentary on the movie.![]()

I like the History Channel's three hour special on Alex.
PBS has some good shows as well.
"The Last Stand of the 300" on the Discovery channel was good.
