    Default [RTR AAR] THRACIA rising!

It's been a while since I haven't touched RTR; now it's time to return to my addiction once again...

This is my first AAR, therefore I hope I will not bore you to death. I chose Thrace, because I want to have control over the mac's and the seleucids (later). This will let me know if there is any other potential super-power in the game 'cept for Rome and Carthage. I don't limit myself to any specific rules (I even use toggle_fow command once in a while). Playing on VH/VH RTR: PE 1.9 w/ BI installed. AFAIK VH/VH is supposed to be the hardest mods, yet there are some rumors regarding m/m and h/h. Amirite?

    Let the massacre begin!

    This is my starting location:

Constructing paths and/or traders and letting that spy go into my future holiday residen.... erm, Anchialus. I used my spy to go and get trade rights and map information (when possible). The primary goal at the beginning was to establish a well-running economy without alot of military aggression. Therefore, I needed to get some naval port at the black sea, like Anchialus and Debeltos.
A turn or two later I went and built some towers, forts, blablabla. I can still remember being totally wasted by the greeks, illyrians and macedons at a time. They always attack when least expected/desired.

A nerd is born! This is the first time I get a general that young with so high command points. He's deffinetily a hit. He will soon be a hero:

As soon as I saw my economy sinking well to the bottom I headed to Anchialus with some of my starting army. It wasn't a very nice battle - my first encounter with hellenic-based army.... the outcome wasn't that nice, altho I did win:

I used to hate city battles against any hoplite unit for an obvious reason. Phalanxes can be unbreakable in some cases... The macedons decided to wage war on me the next turn as they besieged Ratiaria... I forgot to get an SS on this one They were also getting their hands on Tylis... the huge rebel garrison there didn't give it up that easy.. even tho they capitulated later. That was the first serious tactical mistake of the macs, because I was now able to attack Tylis, the temporary residence of their faction leader....Apparently he had no chance.

    a little note:
is he brave or is he just a moron?

    SOMATOPHYLAKOS:
    - Sweaty thracians? In my Tylis???
    A RANDOM HAIRY GUY:
    - It's more likely than you think, baldy.

So this was the point those stylish blacky bastards obviously raged out for a while. Because I doubt the reason was they're short on wine and young boys:

    To be continued...

Nice AAR with nice screenshots. But why don't you just make the screenshots actual size instead of letting us open each one seperately to see it?

Erm, sorry, I thought it would be better to not make it image-heavy. I can remake it as soon as I update the whole thing.

I enjoyed my Thracian campaign. You need to make sure that you're feeling the love of fear generating armor-piercing falx, though. I didn't see any in your screenies.

I am playing a Thracian Campain right now too.. they are so fun... they are such good generals...

I had one that was like that too... he died in a glorious battle... those Macedonias are tough...

Its cool to see that you used the same strat i did, take a coastal town, let Macedonia take Tylis...

i had to kill about 13000 macedonians in battle before they stopped attacking me, and i got a ceasefire with them...

    Also, what someone said above.

The Flaxmen are KEY, they are so nice to have in battle, and once they get a few experience points they are leathal...in my campain i have 3 units of them with a gold cheveron... it is beautiful...

Also, the Thracian archer SUCK, they stink, they have such short range... its not even worth having them when fighting Macedonia...

also, why are you not playing on Huge unti setting???

    Keep up the AAR.

    Keep up the this work!

Thrace coupled with Germania are my favourite barbarian factions. I had wonderful campaigns with them. The unit roster for Thrace is awesome: falxmen, bastarnae and even hoplites.. also their cavalry useful for skirmishing and aslo as heavy cavalry. Very interesting faction to play. Just take care when you will fight macedonians - avoid war with everyone else.

IMHO the bigger images would look better. It requires some work to enlarge them and I enjoy just reading so it disturbs it a bit. But it's your choice and your AAR!

Btw what's up with your battlemap minimaps? They look weird.

P.S. the newborn general Duras has an interesting trait combination: military genius, confident commander, war chief and somehow - incompetent attacker! sounds funny how military genius can be incompetent

It's a shame this AAR is inactive. I find Thracian AAR's are insanely fun to do, especially when you get into the falxmen/basternae/getae mood. Try posting more in-battle screenshots, and ditch the smilies. This is my attempt at a Thracian AAR:

Although this may disappoint some people, I am indeed alive, I just went inactive for three years.
