Default How to change faction symbol with paint.net

Tutorial on how to make changes with paint.net

You have to unpack your files of course

you must be sure that your symbol doesn't have any background and that there is only layer in the back

if it does have background (even if it is black or white ) use ruber and delete and chess-styled background will appear (sorry but i really dont know how to express in english hope that those are the right terms)

then you go to SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\ui\southern_european\interface\stratpage_ 02.tga

open it and open image with your icon/symbol , cause paint net allows opening multiple images in one window

use rectangle select function and square your image

then select edit and copy your image

than switch to stratpage_ 02.tga and select paste and your symbol should appear somewhere in the middle of image stratpage_ 02.tga

drag it over a symbol you want to change

if it doesnt have the same shape as the image you want to change than drag it over and delete whats visible of the old one (use zoom function for more accuracy )

now for the size limit of your symbol , im sure you will guess youll know when your symbol is too large

    save your image

IMPORTANT , SAVE YOUR IMAGE IN 32 BIT NOT 24 (DONT WORRY YOULL BE ASKED )

You must edit your medieval2.preference.cfg or you own cfg file with this [io] file_first = 1 , or file_first = true

if you want your symbol appear in main menu and diplomacy screen than do the same (youll notice that youll have to resize your image in some files ) in

    D:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\menu\symbols\fe_buttons_24 and fe_buttons_48 and fe_buttons_80

    thats it

as i noticed you dont need to mess with some alpha-crap stuff with paint net

This is very useful information. Actually, I've found that I can simply cut and paste using Photoshop if there's a faction logo from another mod that I'd like to include in my own. Just make sure that the pixels overlap identically and then "merge to visible" and it seems to work.

I have a more fundamental question, though. WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR LINKING A NEW FACTION LOGO TO A COMPLETELY NEW FACTION? I have seen mods where people have created new factions (rather than simply replacing old ones) and have added new faction logos to either (a) empty slots in the existing interface tga files or (b) new additional interface tga interface files with just new logos on them. How does one tell the game where to "find" these logos? Obviously someone has figured out how to do this, can they share their method in a brief tutorial?

I`ve done many a mod, anything in terms of 2d or any other ui component can be done in it~ plus it is a whole lot easier to use! than most other graphics programs! Kudos! for this! tut~
