you have to use units that have the stakes ability and you can use that unit to put stakes on the ground during deployment stage.

Quality archer units can lay stakes before the battle starts. Anti-cavalry defense for them.

(what would be nice is if routing pikemen would drop their pikes when they're running away. ditto halberds etc)

longbowmen can, so can scotts archers and some other archers but i don't think crossbowmen can

Just like the elephant animation, this Carthage scenario is actually in the game, it just has a small percantage factor for showing up, that's all...

They are called stakes. You can check unit cards for "can deploy sharpened stakes" entries. Generally most of elite and not hibrid archers can do that trick.

thank you for reply! are there some pikemen or spearmen units that can lay stakes on the ground?...i mean...in siege defending battles i usually lay archers on the walls and pikemen just near the gates, where the stakes could be used to prevent cavalry jump into the walls....archers at the gates would be all killed quickly in close battles when the enemy forces to enter....
...an option could be placing archers at the gates, make them lay the stakes, then move to the walls...didn't tried it yet, but i think the stakes would be removed in that case...right?

Set archers with stakes near the gates, and quickly move them onto the walls, as the battle begins.

ONLY some ranged troops can lay stakes on the ground.

mortars (those cannons that can shoot in a great angle) can lay stakes as well. It's useful to have a mortar during defending against a seige b/c it can lay stakes at the gate (if you dont have archers that can) and it can kill a seige tower if i'm lucky enough.
On your PC, the units seem to perform quite poorly. I think there might be something nearby the PC that is causing this problem for you. You may need a mirror to find out what it is.

I think some more artillery may use them, probably bombards, OR just the Great Bombard... As I siad, it is only for ranged units.
