Default M2TW promotes too much violence

Have you all noticed the game seems to really favor violence as the answer to everything and doesn't give diplomacy as much emphasis? I think it would be nice to have more chances to discuss misunderstandings with other factions, or talk your way out of battles with apologies, etc...instead of always thinking with ones fists.

We've tried that, but the AI usually refuse.

The game is called Total War for a reason you know .

Because, from the onset, CA had realized it had no one to code a diplomatic AI ?

I understand where you're coming from, but keep in mind this is a Total *WAR* game.

Diplomacy works fine!!! Nothing gives me more satisfaction when I make em pay me tributes or become vassal states!

Just wait and see how that working diplomacy backfires at your satisfaction.

    as for
    HRE diplomat:Nein, you fool!
Well then he's pretty friendly. I'm always called "dummkopf".

Uhm, its a wargame, the clue is in the title. If you want a diplomacy game then try "diplomacy" (oh noes thats a wargame too, who knew...)
Hit them as hard as you can, as fast as you can, where its going to hurt them the most..... and preferably when theyre not looking!

My battle advisor called my general a dummkopf when he died (my only casualty in that particular battle). He had 10 command if he attacked/sieged and about 8-9 dread, I was pretty bummed after that and used give_trait on another character.

But the diplomacy is totally balanced. I mean the following counter-offer:
    Demand: 1640 florins
    Give: Caen
Is way better than the starting offer:
    Demand: Caen
Give: 500 florins for 10 turns

And if a faction offers an alliance, trade rights and map information and you reply with an alliance, trade rights and mutual map information, it makes sense to turn it down and to say "We have our reasons for not wanting an alliance right now".

The whole History of mankind is but the story of how one War lead to another. Peace makes people happy and encourages routine in their lives, but it soon leads to depression and revolt, even if only in one's mind. War is a dreadful state when people take arms and march with their own lives in their hands to take those of others. This, however, is much easier and simplier than Peace. In times of friendship, people encounter numerous differences between them, which have to be dealt with - peacefully, by diplomacy.
War, on the other hand, is a joyful (;p) state of simplicity, where all you have to do is go and deliver instant Hell to every man that crosses your path.
... damn I should've taken a nick from a War deity, not a deity of Death...

Anyway, Peace builds up troubles. Numerous matters cause problems and need to be changed and managed in a way to make them work for everybody. War eradicates all those small things, it makes them irrelevant.

War was the World's number One cure for all community and international altercations.
Before War, people were coping with sophisticated bureaucratical problems.
After the War, people simply try to survive in a desolated environment. It isn't easier, but it is simplier.

So, after all this dreamy contemplation of mine, I say War is well in its rightful place in this game.
But yeah, shape of even such an absolute like War is greatly affected by diplomatical moves of important people. Thus, diplomacy is important too, which makes bugs in it hurt very much.

PS. Note to self, avoid staying allied with the aggressor if two of your allies go to war. I fell from Very Trustworthy to Mixed just by making a double choice to remain allied with the aggressor yesterday.

PPS. Don't take me all too seriously on this one

OP should go to play CIV4 with diplomacy only on - so there will be no wars.

Personally I don't think there is enough violence to properly represent the time. I'd like to see the heretics burn at the stake. I'd like to see some heads rolling on the ground when my Zweihanders collide with those peasants. I want to see the enemy general's intestines hit the ground while he still stands. It's nice to see the bodies go flying when that big flaming rock lands in the middle of them but to be realistic there should be some loose parts flying about as well. Too much violence? Someone needs to take a drink from the fountain of reality.

Oh my. The OP is right! I never realized it but this game does favor violence as a solution. I guess I'd better warn my children. I wouldn't want them to grow up to be war mongers like President Bush.

    lets see

you can have a "decent" dialouge with your AI from preventing war OR you can SCREW IT AND GO TOTAL WAR!!!

    It has influenced my life.

Last night I layed seige upon my girlfriend untill she gave into my peer pressure.

    but seriously,

It's a game and it's called total war. I wouldn't play if it was all diplomacy. However, I do agree that the ai can be stupid sometimes.

This empire building genre of games is kind of a double edged sword... the diplomacy is weak in this game, but the warfare excellent. Civilization on the other hand has awesome non-violent administrative tasks and great culture building, plus reasonable AI yet a horrific system of battle. It takes me 70 years to train a freaking knight? I'm King of a Feudal system and I can't levy a freaking militia?! I'm Genghis Khan, and my army of horse archers are repelled by a single freaking archer commanded by GANDHI?!!?!
