OK, I have seen some truly brilliant justifications in the forum where someone says "actually, that kind of makes sense, because...." so here is one I don't understand.

Let's say I am in Timbuktu and I own the province. If a rebel or AI enemy stands on my road and blocks it I have no trade, so I get no trade credit for say the gold, but my merchant sitting on it still gets credit for trading it, is that right? My trade goes down for the region, but the merchant is still getting his goods out the the capital, help me see the logic on that one.

Simple, your merchant sends the profits to Timbuktu where they are added to a national treasury there, or he send his profits up the road with a military escort that not visible on the campaign map but bear the national banners, the rebel army, fearing reprisal, allows the trade to past,

Last time I looked there were at least two ways out of Timbuktu. Perhaps the goods are being transported on the less dangerous route?

There is one way through the mountains, and its going towards Marrakesh, while the other one is going towards Mediterranean. Most of the trade goes through the mountains

Some maps/mods have a road going to Arguin also. Perhaps the merchant is so skilled in his trade that he is able to bribe his way past the rebels or sneak around them without them realizing

What does make sense about merchants? Whoever designed this aspect of the game must have gotten a degree in social work.
