    Default Apple Laptops

I will be getting a laptop for University (in September) and I am considering getting a mac - however they always seem to be far more expensive (hardware wise) than the eqivilant parts in a normal laptop - my question is - is it worth the extra money for the apple OS?

I would get the Dell XPS M1530 or M1330, but that's just me. As foe Mac books, how much do you want to spend on a laptop?

Yes. Before you buy though, look for the nearest location of an Apple Store and go try it out (if you have been using Windows). I personally find OSX a lot more fluid and pleasant to use than Windows as the main application I use in Windows is vastly improved on the MacBook (I use a Pro). The main thing about OSX is the sheer ease of use when using programs like photoshop or if you're going to be using it for schoolwork, it really will make life very easy.

If you ever find yourself wanting windows again, then you can use boot camp and run windows on your laptop so there's really no loss there (and it will perform identically on an Apple laptop as on a Windows laptop).

Its worth it !!! buying a mac book, ever since i got my mac book pro (to accompany my mac pro) a few months ago no regrets whatsoever. You can run windows using bootcamp or parallels and its extremely fast and snappy, plus tiger and leopard is the best OS to use. Think Different

    Have you considered using Linux?

Ubuntu Linux is a completely free operating system for your computer. It can replace OSX or Windows, and work on Apple Mac hardware. It is feature-rich, highly-customizable and has a wealth of free software ready for installation at your whim.

Linux has software for nearly every conceivable purpose to replace the Windows alternative. GIMP, Pidgin and OpenOffice are examples of the quality of Linux software. This is a great list of essential software for Linux, and its Windows counterpart.

If you're interested in giving Linux a try, then feel free to PM me with any questions that you might have, or make a thread. TWC has its share of Linux users, and I'm sure we can lend you a hand!

Well, the Mac hardware is definitely more expensive than PC hardware, because it's one vendor only. The operating system/window manger is arguable. Personally I never particularly liked Mac OS any more than Windows. The bottom line is basically try both and decide which one you prefer.

Needless to say, I use Linux. If you only want to use it for stuff like browsing the Web and writing up school assignments, Linux is really no worse than anything else, unless you dislike its looks or run into an occasional glitch. You can try it out for free: just download and burn a CD image from the Ubuntu website and reboot your computer. No installation is required ― although it will take a long time to load up if it's reading it off the CD ― and you can just remove the CD and reboot to your regular OS if you don't like it. And of course it's $100ish cheaper, since the OS is free, as are equivalents for various things like Office.

I have tried ubuntu but I gave up after I couldnt install some of the programs I wanted to - Its just easier to use a system which is designed for most users ie Vista or Mac OS.

Mac OS is pretty much like Ubuntu, or the other way around. A little more fancy-er and user friendly-er, but otherwise, I have Ubuntu too, I just hardly ever boot into it lately.

Vista? I have that too. On my shelf. until Microsoft gets its act together and fixes it.

By the way, I was thinking about buying a MAC laptop, and I actually consider it over the pre-installed Vista-Laptop, but since I stick with desktop systems for now, and I do not wish to operate a desktop MAC with that awful 1-button mouse, so I still use the trusty WinXP.
