Default can we move retinues around?

does anyone know if we can move the members of a retinue from one character to another?

i notice that its possible to click and drag on the portraits on a retinue - but then when i try to click and drag to a different character portrait nothing happens - why does the click and drag work if we cant do anything with it?

You can If you have 2 generals in the same stack, select the retinue and drag and drop it on the Unit card of the other general.

You can't give a character two of the same retinue. Nor can you give them two of the same...type...of retinue. Some retinue, although different, are considered to be equivalent(don't ask me which ones) so that could be what's wrong.

Or you're letting the retinue go too fast, before it can be put on the new character.

I'd suggest taking both generals out of a settlement and then doing it. Simply select the doner, select the trait to move and drag and drop onto the new owner. I've had trouble doing the transfer in a settlement before.

I've read somewhere that some traits can't be transferred (not sure which one). I tend to only move the churigeon (?) trait as that's quite handy for a field general.

Note to Brus: There is a difference in "traits" and "retinues".

Traits are the text to the rigth. Retinues is the dudes on the left.

Well, as I posted I only really look for churigeon, anyway....

That's one of the same "type" retinue I mentioned...I don't think a character can have a 'chirugeon' and an 'herbalist'...there're others but that's one I remember

Isn't a herbalist for the barbarians and Chirurgeon for Romans and Greeks?

I don't know. I just know, IIRC, that the Temple of Mars will give you an 'Herbalist'...I'm pretty sure it's the Temple of Mars and not Ceres...

How come I can't add any retinues to my faction leader/heir? Or isn't that possible?

There's a limit to how many retinue a character can have. I think the maximum is 8.

A character can not have two of the same retinue or two of the same type of retinue.

If none of these conditions apply and you still can not add retinue...sounds like a glitch somewhere.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot the most important factor: To exchange retinue two characters MUST BE IN THE SAME PLACE...whether it's on a boat, in a city, a fort or in the same army out in the field the characters must be in the same place. Transferring retinue using the family tree screen WILL NOT WORK!

It is possible to have an herbalist and a chirugeon with the same faction member, but you have to have the herbalist first (might be the other way around, but I'm pretty sure). Now while this is possible, their effects don't seem to stack - I didn't do any controlled experiments, but that's the feeling I got - so it seems like a waste. But I'm sure one could try save/autoresolve/load/change retinue/repeat to find out for certain. But I'm not going to

edit: I sure use "but" a lot, but it works

yeah i tried it and it worked - i was playing RTW when it wouldnt work - maybe that was why? (since we all know that RTR is loads better...)

also do the retinue guys have a defined lifespan like the spies and asssassins? i have been moving people from father to son characters (which i figure is more realistic - why would a follower just move to jack somebodyelse's retinue anyway?) - but if this means my retinue characters will go on forever then i dont really like the idea...

Just pretend. Pretend that your retinue represent more than one person. Therfore, when you give another character the 'Chirugeon' he isn't really getting a single guy but a staff of medicos(which is represented by the single retinue 'Chirugeon')...the old general(presumably retired) not needing a medical staff anymore can order them to serve whomever he chooses.

    That's just an idea.

I just tried and it works fine. I moved bad retinues from all families to a general and sent him to hell

Unfortunately, no. So, if you are careful, you can pass the "old mentor" from generation to generation, like a heirloom. Of course, if you forget about them and the character dies (or is killed in battle) the retinue disappears.

hmm - thats a good idea, but i'm loathe to use it - nahh im sticking to my rule of just transferring from father to son (and allowing son-in-laws as well - i guess you could do that)
