check this forum out http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=269 it is the strategy/planning forum, where people ask for help/share hints
One thing I've learned so far is: do not underestimate farm upgrades.
In Rome, having too big a population without planning proper infrastructure and fielding a huge garrison resulted in a sure riot. And they couldn't be destroyed. That's why building farms usually meant that your cities are simply going to riot soon.
In M2:TW I find that keeping order in your cities (castles are out of the equation) is a piece of cake. Just have a few priests roll over the province to make it 85% <your religion here> and throw in a few militia units and you're good.
Huge profits from farms all come from one effect of farm upgrades - each upgrade increases pop growth by 0.5%. So a town with 1000 men and 1% basic pop growth will hit 2000 men in:
- about 80 turns without any farming upgrades
- about 45 turns with a single farming upgrade
So the difference is huge! Count in the fact that every citizen gives you taxes and reaching higher level settlements gives you better money-making buildings faster.
So, all in all, I say:
In Rome:TW build farms if you want to die.
In M2:TW build farms if you wanna make fat ca$h.

At least it worked for me extremely well. I'm making tons of money where I used to make 'just enough'.
And when the plague hits the farm income doesn't drop to zero like it does with trade.
