    Icon5 A couple of questions

First of all, I would like to say Hello! I have totally just joined the forums, after carousing for a few months.

Second of all, I'd like to give props to the EB guys. I'd almost given up on RTW. Thank you most of all for changing the darn Greek language, it was horrible in the vanilla. (I am Greek if you were wondering) You guys have rejuvenated my love for the whole series, I'm waiting for EBII.

    Anyway, my questions.

    1) Is there any way to actually watch the other people's turns? I have it running on the totally reg settings for my computer, and for some reason I just cannot watch Epeiros, which I would love to do. And to fore go the questions, I am running it at my standard RTW settings for my pc, everything is at least High and at 1280x1024.

    2) I would love to play the Koinon Hellonon, however, my problem is that Makedonia always rushes Athens. I also do not have enough money to keep it from happening. I am not a superb play at this, but I at least figured there has to be some way to keep it. I am already leaning toward horrible debt from the get go, and losing Athens would cripple me (as well as offend my mom).

    3) I just captured Taras, as the Romani, I subjugated it, and changed it to the Italian Regional Gov't. I cannot build my barracks buildings there though. Is there a reason for this? I destroyed the Western Greek ones. Do I have to destroy everything thats explicitly western greek? as in the shrine of Asklepios and such?

    Any help is appreciated, Thanks.

    1. As for as I know there is no way to watch AI doing their turns (other then turning on the "watch AI movements" option).

    2. Thats the challenge and fun of starting off with a smaller nation. Disband ships, keep tax as high as you can, sack enemy cities or do anything to bring your economy back up.

Just think, you may lose Athens at the beginning but if you work hard enough you can earn enough money to raise an army that you can use to take Athens back and walk through the streets a hero.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that yes I do have follow AI characters. It goes to them, but I see it for only a quick second. I like seeing what my enemies are doing around me, and well I guess I just cannot. I'll just have to be very perceptive when I look at my cities.

I guess then, Greece will have to wait till I get better. Oh well.

I decided Taras was giving me a lot of trouble, mainly because I just occupied the city and they wanted to riot. So I restarted my autosave. I have it captured, and enslaved them, the Epeirote building there is at 100% damage, and I destroyed it, and placed the Italian Regional Gov't I, and I destroyed the Greek Barracks there, I still cannot make any units. I tried leaving the Greek Barracks and that did nothing either. Anyone, help!

As the Romani you are pretty limited at the start as to where you can recruit factional troops (Hastati, Principes, Triarii etc.); only in your starting cities and Segesta (where modern-day Genoa sits in Northern Italy). It is only once you get to the Polybian reforms that you can recruit in the whole of Italia and Sicilia, and for Marian / Imperial across your territory.

So until you get the reforms you have to build lvl 3 or 4 governments and recruit only regional troops in Taras and other conquered cities.

if you want quick, cheap, "place holder" troops for a city to keep some order, so your attacking armies can move on to other conquests, build the "local troops barracks" thingy (I am at work and do not remember the exact name).

it costs 900 mnai, and takes 3 turns to build. once you do, you'll find that you can build some greek-like spearman in Taras (along with some skirmisher type dudes). the same rule applies to wherever foreign land you are in, as the Romani. this strategy works everywhere. the same building is available, but the troops available will be different of course. it's all the local stuff, like, Gallic spearman for example in the northern areas (modern Europe).

the unit icon (the building that is) looks like a smallish brown building with one or more silver/grey buildings around it. you usually have to scroll all the way down so you can see the last possible buildings that are available for you to build. I use this tactic all the time, so my General and Roman troops can pick up and carry on after a year or so (4 turns) after I conquer a province.

Also, just a general tip; I almost never see any other useful choice upon capturing a city other than to enslave the population. it provides the best combination of revenue (sacking the city), and economic boon in other cities (slaves) as well as some "pacification" value for the captured settlement.

Remember, IMO the most valuable commodity are your citizens and large, economically viable provinces. Massacering captured provinces is, IMO, the worst thing you can do if you intend to keep the province. slaughtering the populace is only a viable tactic as a "scorched earth" type strategy, with some slash & burn tactics in the enemy rear area provinces.

    Enjoy! Hope this helped.

Thanks guys. I was going nuts reading the FAQ and I was thinking it says all Italian Homelands, but ok that helps. Ill just build the Local Levy Buildings and use some Greek Hoplites.

I agree, but I always operate a house rule of my own:

Never enslave in a Homeland province.

The people in Homeland provinces are my own people (even if misguided enough to be serving someone else) and so enslaving them would be wrong morally and politically. Persuasion to my cause is better, even if it takes longer and costs me more money.

Slavery should only be imposed on foreign peoples, IMO. And only the most bitter of enemies (e.g. barbarian savages) deserve extermination.
