    Default Creating Legions?

    Hi Guys,

I've got a beginner's question about RTR. Is it possible to 'create' your own legions in RTR? I mean, build a force or legion and give it a name and/or recruiting area? I'd like to do this so as to add some extra immersion, and also to encourage me to look after units and heal them and retrain them. I'd be interested to know if this is possible or if anyone else has managed to do something similar.

    Hey there ,
I have forgotten the number of units a full stack is composed of, but here's my answer to your question.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

For the Pre-Marian Roman Legion (Early/Middle Republican legions)
    -1 or 2 Generals
    -2 Velites
    -3 Hastati
    -3 principes
    -2 Triarii
    -2 Equites
-The remaining units should be hired mercenaries or Italian swordsman/spearmen.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

For the Post-Marian Legion (Post Republican/Early Empire legions)
    -1 or 2 General
    -10+ Roman legionary cohorts
    -2 artillery units
    -2 Equites Singulares
-The remaining units should be hired mercenaries/skirmishers

And as for naming your Roman legions, be creative and use your imagination
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Or you can download the RTW mods, Roma Surrectum & S.P.Q.R. Total War

As in Legio V Macedonica? Not in RTR, which gives equal weight to all factions. There are some other mods that do this, however, which focus more on the Roman state.

4 turn per year mod for RTR PE might work. And I think Imperator II uses a modified system like the 4tpy one.

edit: You can't name the legion yourself, but in 4tpy the family member who has 10 years of army service can become a legate and gain the "Roman # Legion" ancillary banner. After 20 years service, praetors get "Roman # Field Army" (IIRC, I haven't played in 6 months). 25 years of service allows one to become a consul (2 max), and the character gets the "Consul I/II Army"

    That's correct.

And "Coming of Age" characters get the trait "Disciplus" until they're 20 when they become Tribunes...

I think the OP would enjoy this feature.

    Lestat,

Does that mean that the AI will take into consideration where a character is when granting him his Legio banner? In other words, in order to get "IX-Hispania" does a character have to be in Iberia? Or am I completely misunderstanding this?

The legion banner (Leg I , Leg II etc) can be granted anywhere once the trigger is reached. The legion ames are different actually, for example Leg II Augusta can be recruited one you have citizenship building in Sicily.

I use to roleplay a bit by giving banner to general who lead the same legion number. Since the banner was triggered according to number (Legio I, Legio II and so on) I try to recruit legion in succession number. I use one experience general to 'create' the banner and pass the banner to a new general who will go to the provinces to recruit the legion..

The banner will be triggered I think every 5 provinces conquered (if I'm not mistaken).

    * Pre-marian -
    * Hastati , Principes & Triarii can only be recruitable in AOR Italy
    * Alae Hastati & Alae Principes are recruitable outside AOR Italy
    * Coloni Militum can be recruited both pre & post marian if Garrison is build
    * Post-marian -
    * Named Legion recruited according to specific AOR region
    * Legio I Italica - Recruited from among the citizens all over Italy
    * Legio II Augusta - Recruited from the former Carthaginian province
    * Legio III Gallica - Recruited among various Gallic and Celtic tribes
    * Legio IV Scythica - Recruited from the tribes of the Schytians and Sarmatians
    * Legio V Macedonica - Recruited from the provinces of Macedonia
    * Legio VI Ferrata - Recruited from the Greek Provinces
    * Legio VII Alaudae - Recruited from the province of Gauls
    * Legio VIII Gemina - Recruited from the provinces of Germania
    * Legio IX Hispana - Recruited from the province of Iberia
    * Legio X Primigenia - Legion recruited in Rome from among the true Roman citizens
    * Legio XI Cyrenaica - Recruited from the conquered Egyptian province
    * Legio XII Fulminata - Recruited from the Umbrian region in Italy
    * Legio XIII Fretensis - Recruited from the province of Egypt and Syria
    * Legio XIV Parthica - Recruited from among the citizens of the eastern provinces
    * Legio XV Appolinaris - Recruited from the province of northern Italy
    * Legio XVI Triana Fortis - Recruited from the Eastern provinces
    * Legio XVII Claudia Pia Fidelis - Recruited from the conquered Eastern province
    * Legio XVIII Macriana Liberatrix - Recruited from among the Iberians and Numidians
    * Legio XIX Minervia - Recruited from Germans and the Numidians
    * Legio XX Valeria Victrix - Recruited among various Dacian and and Scythian tribes
    * Legio XXI Adiutrix - Recruited from the home regions of Umbria
    * Legio XXII Germanica - Recruited among the tribes of Germania
    * Imperial Legions - If one play longer into the campaign, with the birth of dynastic empire, all Roman Legions are recruited more in systematic way. Now the Legions are basically the same in weapons and armour. They will have a standardize equiptment and were given square shield instead of the regular oval shield and a new lighter but stronger armour famously known as the lorica segmenta.
    * All footbase auxiliary units get 0 turn recruitment, generally all AOR units get 1 less turn recruitment from factions units.
Notes: While these legions historically exist, the numbers and recruitment area has been re-arranged for gameplay/balancing purposes. While their stats are basically the same, however diferent legion will act differently in different ground conditions. For example, a legion raised in Egypt will not perform well in the forest of Germania and will have trouble and prone to ambush.
