What faction to play as if you prefer infantry?

Hello TWC!

So far I've got 160 hours of Medieval 2 according to my Xfire profile so I'm still quite a 'noob'...

I really like the infantry in Medieval 2 and I prefer using large infantry forces to large cavalry forces. I played as Scotland and had some wonderful battles against the English using scores of infantry. However, I find that a lot of other factions weak point seems to be their infantry, according to the description given when you choose your faction. I want to fight battles where infantry plays the main role and is the most used unit, not cavalry. What factions can you recommend for this?

When playing England you will rely on your infantry in combination with longbowmen.

holy roman empire without a doubt. they have forlorn hope and probably the best infantry in the game, dismounted Gothic knights
in fact they are good all round but are hell to defend with enemies all round

Venice are also good and so is denmark

Yeah I´d go for Venice, u start out with cheap but effective italian militias and crossbows and later on u get the venetian heavy infantry.

England has the cheapest (yet still very effective):

Yeoman archers
Levy spearmen (after the armour upgrades they're good)
Armoured swordsmen

And then a few units of knights or something.

Scotland:
Noble Pikemen is among the strongest infantry you can find. They fight in 3 lines, holding the enemy away from you while slowly killing them, It's effective both against cavalry and infantry. But weak to flanking and got no real protection against missile fire. But your Border Horses is great to counter enemy archers with hit and run attacks.

My ussual tactic for an infantry vs infantry fight is Noble Swordsmen in front to take on the first charge, following close behind is the pikemen. By doing that you give protection to your pikemen while they "poke" your enemy to death.

So far I've met no infantry that can counter that. But on the other hand, i'm quite new to this game.

I was under the impression that France were mostly using horses? Are they very good at both horses and infantry then?

The answer is simple:

Catholic: Denmark, H.R.E., Milan, Venice, Sicily, Scotland

Orthodox: Byzantine Empire

Islamic: The Moors (Turks get an honorable mention)

moors? i think they start out with weak infantry then they get urban militia which are pretty good and after those they dism christ guards but those are weaker than the European dism knights

Denmark seems to be quite a popular answer here. I don't really wanna play any of the "Italian" factions, so Denmark or HRE seems to be the most likely choice...

However HRE seems so hard, someone mentioned that they are attacked from everywhere which seems like it could be a big problem for someone who is quite noobish (me). And who would you attack playing Denmark? If you attack the HRE you'll be in the same situation, being attacked from everywhere. Or is it better to go for a invasion of Russia as Denmark? Or perhaps England?

If you dislike the italian factions it lowers your choices to Byzantine, Scotland, England, Denmark, HRE

Scotland: Easy starting position, cut off from a lot of enemies. They have very good infantry from the start, though the usefullness of their infantry is not as high late game, when gunpowder and whatnot shows up. Good all around infantry team

Denmark: Great for infantry, very good if your noobish, rather cut off starting position, strongest infantry at the beginning, and it gets better later. Norse archers are some great missle troops as well, giving you missle support but still being able to fight. They have a lot of good against armor options as well.

HRE: Similar to denmark, but their infantry starts a bit slower, they have a pretty hard starting position, but their infantry is definatly good. Gotta love those heavy two handed weapons.

Byzantine: They start with good infantry, gets better as it goes, and it ends up with some of the best heavy infantry in the game, along with very good archers, the Byzantine Guard Archers. They are the Norsemen of the east Relatively bad starting area though, and the Turks can be a big problem, as can the venetians if you allow them to be.

England: Good starting position, just as scotland, but you start out with a small claim on the mainland of Europe. That small claim can be easily defended, being a big beefy castle. They start with average infantry, and they end with pretty good infantry. They wont stand up toe to toe with Denmark, HRE, or Byzantines, or even the later Scots for that matter, but they have arguably some of the best missle support. The Longbowmen are very good, and a well balanced force of Dismounted English Knights, Armoured Swordsmen, and Longbowmen will do a lot of damage.

Though, if you really prefer big infantry battles, I'd suggest getting kingdoms and trying out the Americas campaign.

Yes I will be getting Kingdoms once I've got a new gfx card. However I still wont play it until I've milked every last drop out of vanilla Medieval 2. This is my absolute favorite game and I'm scared I wont like it anymore after playing Kingdoms...

I'll most likely be going for a Danish campaign then, HRE seems very, VERY cool but I think I need some more experience before trying the country with the WORST(?) starting position.
