    Default Penal Battalions

Throughout history, criminals have been offered the choice to rot in prison/face execution or join the military and fight, like the famous soviet penal battalions or the famous south korean 'dirty dozen' unit 684 shown in the film 'Shilmido'. Penal battalions typically undertook suicidal missions like the one where soviet penal battalions 'cleared' a minefield for a General by walking across it.

Given the current state of world affairs, should we allow criminals the chance to rehabilitate via military service?

I would prefer to do that to Mexico. Have a public policy for every illegal that crosses the border an inmate will be released into Mexico with 5 dollars, a bottle of water, and an english to spanish dictionary.

Actually, I'm in favor of parachuting the inmates of all of our supermax prisons ... federal and state ... into Mexico City.

I think so, Exarch. Drop a company of volunteer lifers/condemned right on top of enemy concentrations while national forces battle them just to create confusion and mayhem. And if the criminals manage to shoot their way out then they have earned another chance.

Alternatively, take volunteers from among lifers/condemned for a real bloodsport to entertain the masses. Like gladiators. There are so many fakers and experts around claiming they know how the various gladiatorial fighter-types used tactics, but they are just dreamers. Put some real men in an arena with real weapons - it wouldn't take too long for the workable tactics to develop. I'd watch it. Pay-per-view. A guy wins x number of fights he is free.

At least they have a chance - they can feel like real men again, one last time, with either scenario. Rather than rot for 20 years in a toilet cubicle before getting the needle, they can go out fighting, and have a chance at life.

But as if modern Western governments would permit such a thing, anyway.

Uh sorry but even serial killers and mass murderers? Am I the only one who doesn't get the logic of releasing someone who's been condemned for killing lots of people, by killing lots of people?:hmmm:

Provided my country is not faced with a severe external threat involving large-scale conventional war without the need for winning hearts and minds then I can't see it happening and nor do I think it should.

You could offer a new identity with your national passport after service. That way you'd get a load of hard-as-nails murdering bastards of various nationalities who's heinous crimes made them persona non grata to join who no one would want to mess with.
Oh wait...no that's the French Foreign Legion.

It isn't actually as they don't admit known murderers or people who've committed serious crimes in general.

You are not living in 100 years ago are you??

Don't even enter Legion's recruit centers if you commit serious crimes - they would send you to prison immediately.

It means those who is desperated for their life except serious crimes, such as: Lost job, uneducation people, those who lost someone they love and could not recover, those who got separated from their lover, adventurers, political exile (not mention how many SS joined Legion), those who wanted to fight for France but got reject (in fact, Legion was full of American volunteers during WWI) and all sore of those things.

In fact, many legionnaires believe they are half-dead before they join - which is part of reasons why they are so effective.

Anyway, recently most Legionnaires are Eastern European who want to earn more money (not to mention it contains full of Russians).

problem is though, what if they live? you going to let people who really shouldnt be in society back out again?

and its a bit of an extreme punishment for those not paying there parking fines or doing a bit of graffiti. it is almost a death sentence.
