    Default boiling oil question

I have played several grand campiegns. both vinilla and with the unpacker files, I have never seen my troops use buring oil while defending a siege. I have solderies on the walls and behind the gate, the flags are up on the gate towers so I know there being maned and these castle are built up to there max level. I can see the spouts where the oil should come out but it never does. is this a bug or does it just not work?

I don't think boiling oil was added in vanilla Medieval 2. Kingdoms introduces boiling oil though and using the Retrofit mod will let you use boiling oil in the grand campaign.

pwijnands is right. There is no boiling oil an vanilla. But if you want to play Grand campaign and if you have Kingdoms, there is really no reason why you shouldn't download the retrofit mod.

No, choose. If you don't have Kingdoms, get Stainless Steel, and if you do have Kingdoms get Retro Fit Mod

The current version of SS needs Kingdoms.

How do you drop the boiling oil?... my men must be near the gate so the flags are up?

Does it just drop on the first enemies that rush through the gate?
It's automatic. I don't remember if the oil drops while the gate is being rammed but as soon as the gates are opened and men start rushing through it, the oil will pour every certain number of seconds.

The boiling oil is automatically triggered when the troops are near the gate. So any soldiers using a ram get it first. DLV also has Kingdom features in the Grand Campaign.

You need to have troops nearby (on the gatehouse or the walls besides them) before any oil will pour out. The troops on the side walls can be a fair distance away (I'm definately changing this for my game).

I only just started playing SS 5.1. So you saying boiling oil is in the grand campaign of this mod. The descriptions of the walls does not have boiling oil in its list of features like it did in RTW. I assume this is just an oversight.

Thank goodness the world isnt so dark anymore. Nowadays, the closest you will get to being attacked with boiling oil is eating at a KFC.

Ever been in modern combat? I have, and I wish combat was the same as it was in the middle ages, making it more personal. Would be less inclined to goto war.

What kind of oil was it? Olive oil seems to be too valuable for this? Did the Crusader use pig fat? (Clarified of course!) Was it whale oil? I hope not, that would be so very bad. To think of all those poor innocent whales being so misused with no one to sympathize is so sad. I don't think I can continue to play Kingdoms any more.

We have to refuse to buy Kingdoms for the sake of the in-game whales!

I think it was mostly pitch rather than oil.

It was Baby Oil. Seems someone actually did think of the children.

You see, it all came about during a terrible siege. The defending army was commanded by a max Dread General. Said General was married to a max Charm Princess. One day, during the third year of the siege, looking out at the people's suffering, the Princess was heard to exclaim "Oh, won't somebody think of the children?" Her husband, always swayed by the Princess' words, suddenly had an idea. He ordered his men to round up all the street urchins and the rest, as they say, is history.
