    Default Web Developers Base

There's an existing thread, but it's been dead for over a year now.

    Sup, web programmers?

I have no formal training, but I've picked up a fair amount of PHP & MySQL, predominantly from a number of books. I know my way around a LAMP setup well enough. I'm also picking up Oracle eBusiness Suite, but that's a long way off from competency.

I've developed and deployed a couple of internal applications for a company (A basic CRM system in PHP/MySQL, whilst giving SOA a go, which was, in hindsight, a great learning experience), and am currently pondering my next hobby project.

Does anyone have any professional tips on applications design and specifications, for Web Development?

Well, I'm a web programmer and server administrator, as you can see from my signature. I mostly know PHP, although I strongly dislike that (I prefer Python); and MySQL, which I might dislike if I had another reference point (like PostgreSQL), but I don't, so I have no opinion on it either way. I'm relatively familiar with Linux, which I use both at home and on servers, and Apache ― although I've heard interesting things about lighttpd and nginx and would be interested in trying them at some point. Also Squid, which I know a little bit about because Wikipedia uses it heavily (30 Squid servers in Amsterdam handle like a third of the world's Wikipedia traffic, and they're at near-zero load).
