DLV PE question
I just downloaded this mod after playing vanilla for awhile and I am impressed but I have a couple problems/questions.
First I noticed you can't control the AI reinforcements but I was wondering if the player AI reinforcements didn't get the AI upgrade because when they do, the general just charges ahead like a moron and gets killed, while any enemy AI face the general keeps himself fairly safe unless he sees and opening to charge.
Secondly and related to the battle map, I'm somewhat confused with the battle system itself....such as while playing as Flanders (big shocker) my "elite" Flemish Sword merchants get completely devastated when going 1 on 1 with a sergeant spearmen group...why? The same thing goes for cavalry charging into the back of any infantry unit, they charge and inflict heavy losses but then their numbers start flashing red indicating huge losses themselves. Is this the product of playing on VH/VH?
Lastly the fact that with build times at 4 turns and a rebel stack attacks Bruges on turn 2, I have no idea how you are supposed to repel them due to the fact that the Flemish militia you start with are near worthless against the rebel spearmen and pikemen.

Re: DLV PE question
In my experience, AI reinforcement generals throw their lives away too. This is definitely a kingdoms bug as it happens in vanilla too
If you are going to use the reinforcements just make sure that army doesn't have a general...
As far as your last question.... Mercenaries.

Re: DLV PE question
The 4.0 PE is based off of content from just the original M2TW. The ability to control your reinforcements came with the kingdoms expansion and versions 5.0 and up are based on this. The deal with the generals heading straight in and getting killed has been an issue and was also in vanilla m2tw if i recall correctly. In battles certain units are better or worse against other specific units. Why your Flemish sword merchants lost to sergeant spearmen I do not know. Maybe morale, certain bonuses, or penalties perhaps? Cavalry in DLV is tweaked so that the initial charge is devastating while remaining in melee combat against certain types of units such as infantry can be devastating to them as well. The rebels showing up outside of cities at start is normal and is a test to surpass for what's possible to come in the long run. I would suggest reading the DLV handbook in your medieval 2 directory.

Re: DLV PE question
I read the handbook but didn't see anything detailing why the battle system is so different. I actually have done some testing since and put exact same units 1v1 and saw some interesting things.
One example was Welsh Spearmen (mercs) under captain armies (no bonuses) they start fighting like normal but with no outside influences I saw my unit getting the red numbers of death again. Looking closer it's almost like the other unit is turning one step backwards then charging again and doing it repeatedly resulting in them basically looking like they are nuts but in turn destroying my units. I don't know if it's what I'm seeing but there is A LOT of movement that I haven't seen in vanilla and/or kingdoms.
In campaign terms when the rebel army sieges Bruges I set up stakes behind the gates and put my flemish pikemen unit behind it in spearwall formation, I would think conditions could not get more ideal but with flank support from the miltia units and nobody surrounding them, they get slaughtered in no time from enemy melee/the few cav that don't die on the stakes and the incredible effectiveness of the welsh longbowmen who obviously are not firing at the ideal arc but still doing enough damage for the unit card again to show flashing red losses.

Re: DLV PE question
Its happened to me too, the gates just keep getting pushed by so many units that boiling oil is usually crap. yeah ive tried to defend a settlement with 4 full units of soldiers, used to work with walls with oil in ROME , strangely it dont work in medieval ><
Meh hatez it >.>
But yeah im guessing it has to do with the mass or something since there are so many dang bodies being pushed through the wall that this probably simulates the fact that....
bodies being pushed through are making your soldiers fall.... so yeah they fall and bam they die. Idk how else to explain it but i find it ridiculous myself...pikemen shouldnt die that easily at the gates >.>
