    Default the Great Library

does the world have a famous center of human knowing? like the library of alexandria?

    should we?

discuss the overall importance of a "great library"

here is my personal feeling, influenced by reading 80s sci-fi books , I have come to believe that a great library would be a central key in a unified human society; or a unified society of any kind.

to have all your knowledge gathered and recorded in one place, where all can access it and discuss it etc ( perhaps that is the purpose the internet will serve?) perhaps the internet is already our great central library; but I still think we need an official one with all our old books kept safe.

as a side note please list famous centers of knowledge that you know about

the only one that is reasonably famous to me is the arsenal in paris-- I think its called the arsenal or la arsenal you know how french people are.

Yeah I think the internet already covers all of that plus its accesible to a lot more people than a great library. I really dont think a place like you say would be necesary, maybe just to show arts and human knowledge, but I think it would be more like a vanity than a real need, since, as I said, Internet already covers all of that

yeah but the internet is a place of manipulation and not entirely devoted to knowledge and the honest preservation of that knowledge. the internet is corruptive to knowledge imo; thus I think a more devoted central bank of Information so to speak needs to exist. --something more somber and without bukkake porno and goatse and two girls and acup

Well the problem is that that is not nearly as accesible as Internet or any other media. How many people could visit that place? Even if it can have a huge amount of people, how is someone living on the other side of the World supposed to get there. Such a place would really only be easily accesible to the people living close to it, so its not so useful. As I said, maybe it could work as a monument to knowledge but still internet is way more useful.

True, internet is really ****ed up in some ways but well, so far its the best we have, and a "Great Library" wouldnt be an improvement imo.

    Timbukto modern day mali,

    Harvard, America

    Mecca, Saudi Arabia

    Oxford, England

York and U.F.T ( university of Toronto) i rep Canada

I think the only way people from around the world were to become one is if we all spoke one main language, (which is slowly being implemented in every country)

Latin as a universal language? I would support it, that would be cool , but Rome seems to be a center of knowledges. 9and who knows what secrets the basements of the Vatican contain...?)

vatican library is an excellent choice pontifex-- they really have untold amounts of ancient documents; and they simply refuse to share.

perhaps as a central hub of valuable information and then they copy it and disseminate it on the internet-- not news; not opinions, but just information.

but I suppose your right the vast network of university already engaged in this makes the internet our central informer already.

but I still want a great library just because that would be cool

Great idea. Put all the earth's knowledge in one place so it's easier to destroy it in one fell swoop and lose it all. Just like the Library of Alexandria.

Multiple large centers of learning is quite appropriate to help prevent that sort of catastrophe of lost knowledge. Even Oxford's libraries are in multiple buildings, both above and underground.

but these arent the same times as the library of alexandria--- I can't really think of many catastrophe that could effect say a bunker full of books in some mountains somewhere-- we need some sort of sacred store of knowledge to gather a religiousity about learning and science, so that it becomes the most important enterprise to all of humanity

this is what I think a great library would do, if you made it grand enough, mighty enough, where it would inspire and stun, and shape the faith of generations !

There's already one. In actual fact, internet has remained the greatest library for over a decade now. And it's also not possible to destroy it. What a boon to mankind!

I suggest we build it on the Moon, a kilometer below the surface.

    Safe enough for you, Gwen?

actually the internet could easily be destroyed-- it just seems very solid to you and very safe--- but it could fall as easily as any building.

and furries and crushophiles would not be in the great library; but they are in the internet... its not a solid store of knowledge its a store of ******** mixed with knowledge.

I don't know about science, but as far as philosophy/religion go, this is your Library of Alexandria. And it's furry free, guaranteed... except possibly in the "neo-pagan" section.

I like the idea about hiding it on the moon-- a mile underneath.

The internet cannot really be destroyed or at least less easily than any physical storage places which is a ridiculous idea as has been stated, multiple centers of learning which is what we have is far better than trying to form everything together in one place.

The real sad event for the internet was corporate publishers buying up document and study rights so they aren't an open resource. Companies like JSTOR and others have basically removed what could have been a fantastic thing.

What the world needs is a new wikipedia that is more academic drawing together people of an academic background for scholarly articles since google scholar is useless without unlimited funds.

Mind you it should be noted that universities make great steps toward this. The stanford online resource for philosophy is the most comprehensive philosophy resource anyone could ask for.
