If you're beginning I would start with something small, like retexturing a unit, and building up from there. If you really want to jump right into things though, find Professor420's video tutorials on our Wiki and watch those.

Another good ones the tutorials. There is an addon I am quite certain for photoshop which I use for skinning

I think thats pretty nifty. But those vids are awesome anyways so thats a smart idea
