    Default Odd Popes?

    This just seems so wrong...

1136- with only five cardinals left, two of which were mine(English), the election of a new pope pretty much hinged on my decision. I voted for my Venitian ally's cardinal, who obviously immediately became Pope. No more than two turns later he has threatened me with excommunication unless I break off the war I was fighting with France.
I decide to spy on the pope as a possible prelude to assassination (often my means of keeping the Holy Father in line).
    I was shocked.

Traits found(may not get all the names exactly right):
    Utterly Corrupt
    Drunkard
    Utterly Insane
    Pervert
    Atheist
    Totally Deranged
    Lustful
    Very Strong language
    Doomsayer
    Completely Unorthodox
    Warmonger
    Terrified of Islam
    Terrified of Orthodoxy
    Terrified of Catholics (?)
    Shattered Faith
Terrified of the Papal States (?!?!!!)

How on earth did this man even become a priest, much less a preferati cardinal and then pope?!?

I was so apalled that I had him almost immediately assassinated (as an aside, i found Rome surrounded by high-level witches and heretics. Shameful lax.)

A near perfect cardinal of mine was elected, then was a good little puppet and excommunicated the French.

Anyone else have something like this? Even the elections can turn out odd...

I assume you can spy on the Pope by sending a spy to Rome? I never knew this......

The Italian factions(i.e Milan, Venice) do backstab rather a lot don't they?

Btw when I assassinated the (umm? what to call him?) Pope, i got my favorite assassination movie (Cathedral, assassin in the rafters, crossbow bolt to the Pope's chest in front of a huge crowd. Very sudden, very public. Ah, how I love it. Statement: stay a puppet or else)

In response to the earlier statement, yes, send a spy to Rome to spy on the Pope(if he's there). This works for all generals, family members, ect, in cities....

I knew that you could do it for generals and family members. I guess the thought just never crossed my mind that the pope might actually reside in vatican city or anything........hahah!

That guy must be paranoid being in Rome for the rest of his life, if I were him I'd go for the grey robe.

Of all those traits, the only one a priest or bishop can get without using the command console is "Completely Unorthodox." Your pope got the rest of those traits either during his transition from a "priest" character to a "named" character or during his time as faction leader as those traits are for family members and generals. I'm curious as to what buildings were present in Rome at the time.

Worst pope I ever had was "Whatshisname" the Mad; he Spewed Venom, was Utterly Insane and was Diabolically Degenerate among other nasty things. He met with an unfortunate accident

If we're talking about odd Popes we should mention the guy that decided he was more of a general than a religious leader, and led a full stack of elite troops marauding across Iberia attacking everyone he came across, whether Spanish or Portuguese or Moorish. He had no command at all, I guess he just felt the need to get violent...

I get that most of these traits were from him being a faction leader, but wow, did the Church get degenerate or what? Actually, some medieval popes were pretty bad, but I don't know if any were that bad.:hmmm:

It was pretty darn funny though. I always think its hilarious when the Pope is "secretly female".

And in response to the post above, some Popes do get incredibly violent (carried away with religious fervor?) and send out massive armies against people. I had another Pope that marched across Eastern Europe, crushed the Byzantines and then invaded the Holy Lands himself. He was refreshingly hands on...

I wonder if he can call out god on the battlefield.

haha I have assassinated several popes and never seen that video, I am missing out!! I have had a lot of corrupt popes but never anything like that...The last time I had a pope backstab me it was one of my own and as soon as I elected him he threatened me to leave the HRE alone...well too bad for him I owned all of north italy and decided it was a perfect time to do away with the pope in italy for good...I assumed the papal states would just go away but after taking the city another pope was elected and all was forgiven...I ended up finding the next pope with a full stack in Africa....the weird thing was when I took Rome it had only 3 units in the city and the pope never made more or moved out of the city.....even now his army just sits by one of the African cities doing nothing.....odd

That is hilarious. In response to one of the above posts, I have seen the "terrified" traits before, but never so many on one faction leader...they pretty much only happen to generals after suffering crushing defeats...Were the papal states at war in your game by chance?

And, are you playing a mod?

I believe the Pope was at war a lot with both other religions. Why he would be afraid of his own religion and faction was one of the things that confused me.

And no, no mod. I wish.

That is interesting. He could be afraid of his own religion easily if he had been at war with other catholic factions as well...as for terrified of the papal states, that's just goofy. The only possible explanation I can give is that venice may have been at war with the papal states when he was elected, at which point he would have been scared of them from the point-of-view of his old faction.

Whatever the case, something obviously happened when he became a "general" (and a very bad one at that!).
