    Default marillion

    Hi everybody,

i suppose I'm sticking my head out here, but has anybody heard of the band marillion. I think they are one of the best, most underated bands still going today.

Having originated out of the neo-progressive movement of the early 1980's they drew on influences like Genesis and Yes. But with the parting of their lead singer, Fish, in 1989, and his replacement with Steve Hogarth, heralded in a new era and new approach to their music.

Added to their great musianship was the soulful lyrics of Hogarth. over the last fifteen years they have created great albums such as 'Brave', 'Afraid of Sunlight', 'This Strange Engine' and 'Marbles'.

They are currently working on their 15th album. Not bad for a an independent band with their own label and a strong belief in what they are doing.

Here's the link to their website:

My advice is the check them out.

    Cheers

I discovered Marillion quite recently. I'm not a huge fan of Hogarth's Marillion (except 'Brave'), but the first 2 albums with Fish are 2 of my favourite albums ever.

I have to admit, I didn't even know Marillion was still around. I have a cassette tape of their third album around here somewhere, the one with "Kayleigh" on it. And before you laugh at the cassette tape reference, you should know that I still have a carrying case buried in storage somewhere which holds 48 8-track tapes.

You would be surprised to hear them now. There music ranges from prog thru to blues.

The track "Ocean Cloud" from their "Marbles" album is 17 minutes of atmospherics. Based on a lone yachtmens journey it caputres the spirit of freedom vs loneliness really well. I recommend it.

Thanks for the recommendation! I will certainly look into their more recent stuff.

I have liked Marillion for years but have lost touch with their music in the last year or so. The band has a very loyal fan base and is respected for their artistic integrity by those outside the commercial music industry. This track "Ocean Cloud" is great, very atmospheric and very reflective, similar in some ways to one of my favourites "This Strange Engine". I can definitely relate to the lyrics which Steve Hogarth explains in the Youtube link.

Fish was entirely carismatic on stage.
He played the soldier in the Forgotten sons miraculously...I saw it on youtube.
Also his stage act as Grendel is unforgottable.

Rothery is a very fine guitarist.. I like the songs Tux on, Chelsea Monday, He know you know, Forgotten sons, Script for a jester's tear above all...

Well, my parents were huge Marillion fans.. The funny thing is, if I had been a girl, they would've called me 'Kayleigh'..

Not that that's a bad name, but it would've been hell to spell or tell others how to spell it. The name Jarno, after the Finnish motor racer Jarno Saarinen who was killed in an accident during a race, is a little easier to spell in Dutch..

Anyway, I had to listen to them on the cassette player in our car during our vacation trips to France, so I've developed a bit of a love-hate relationship with the band..
