I seirously don't watch horror movies anymore for this reason, no they aren't scary, not by a long shot, but THEY MAKE ME ANGRY! I realize not all horror movies can be scary anymore because so many have been done, so at htis point I am not expecting that, but I am expecting drama and suspense, and I fail to get either.

Why you may ask? Well I realize that they are not the most realistic things in the world, but deffying the laws of physics and common sense just really pisses me off. For example, on the Halloween remake the doctor has Mike face first on the pool wounded with a gun, he could have easily killed him and ended the whole thing, and it would have been no trouble at all, and even though Mike just tryed to kill him he feels bad about this, not to mention the number of times the characters aimlessly wanders around the darkness rather then turning on the light switch. Ok, now I realize fear is pouring through thier bodies, but common....
For the sake of argueing lets say that fear instantly turns everybody on this planet into mush, lets look into the stupid physical implications of most horror movies. On a Jason movie (I cannot remember which one sorry) for some reason every weapon they get a hold of instantly jams, ok once a movie fine, but EVERY TIME you pick up a gun, that just magically got there by the way, jams?

I could go on and on, but I got other stuff to do. Vent here about how annoying horror movies are!

Plot devices overrule logic. It helps the audience enjoy something without forcing the writers to be future candidates for the Norton Anthologies.

You can't go out of your way to make entertainment entirely logical.

Because that just gets you Assassin's Creed.
The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part, be connected. The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State. - James Madison

I think it's a bit silly to actually complain about this. Teen horror is one of the trashiest genre out there and isn't exactly overflowing with truly good movies. Most of them are simple formula movies following the rules of the genre without being creative or overly logical. Just take a location, a couple young people and a villain and you have endless material for (bad) movies.

Yeah its not horror movies its the stupid genre (teen) ones that are the problem. Blame Halloween and Friday the 13th for the formula, hell I remember reading an article few years ago that blamed the downfall of horror on Night of the Living Dead since it was the first movie to really push plot out of the way in exchange for the "monster". Just avoid the crappy bad ones especially the ones now a days that try and focus on the trick ending or shock ending that defies all logic. Last semi decent horror movie I saw was 1408.

Horror movies are indeed a cliched genre. Personally I still watch them, but I don't take them too seriously. Films like Scream, the Chucky series, Predator, Aliens etc. are actually meant as simple relief in the form of cheap scares and have a kind of tongue-in-cheek humour in them if you can read between the lines. It's best to regard them like comedy movies: not meant to be immersive or logical or anything, just easy entertainment.

There are movies out there that can be truly, extremely scary/disturbing or "horrifying" without really being classical horror films. I thought for example that Schindler's List was quite scary, because you know all of it has really happened. The Matrix was also a bit disturbing if you think about it, because it gives you that chilly "maybe all of this isn't real" feeling. But that's just my personal experience.

I watched the movie "The Messengers" and although it started scary, it was trying so hard to scare me at every moment that I wasn't scared anymore.

I loved Predator and Aliens, though.
When it comes to movies I am very selective. I don't invest 90 - 120 minutes of my time without doing some research.

Watched 'Jeepers creepers' last night and thought it might have been half decent. It wasn't. It does the usual thing of over-exposing the monster rather than keeping it in the shadows. Yaaawwwnnnn

You know I never got that, part of the horror of horror is the unknown, things unseen and lurking in the shadows but this day and age of cgi, top notch makeup movies always want to show us the monster. What ever happen to tension and suspense aspect of horror? Some of the GREATEST movies did so without the gore or the monster.

Of course now a days the horror formula is a little girl or boy looking sinister or in make up and alot of flash camera angles to show them appearing out of no where....which is equally boring but I blame the Japanese for that one

I enjoyed the first Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street movies. I think the Halloween series is a little better overall but they have obviously degenerated into no-plot slashers over the years - Freddy vs. Jason being rock-bottom.

In my opinion the new horror genre of the last 5 years or so has this almost sadistic element - Saw, Hostel etc. The last horror movies I enjoyed were Se7en and the Sixth Sense, both plot driven.

    P.S

If you want to see a good horror movie try the Vanishing: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096163/. The original, not the remake.

Yeah because at the time they were somewhat original but man if we had known what it would lead to The only movie like that I found enjoyable was Texas Chainsaw but alot of that had to do with the way it was filmed, it wasnt glossy or polished (for the time) it had that gritty feel.

Yeah pretty much, the first Saw was tolerable the rest bleh and Hostel man talk about utterly pointless. I wouldnt mind if it actually SCARED or unnerved me but I prefer not to be bored to death by a crap plot that is trying to simply be sadistic. If I want sadistic horror Ill go watch Audition which doesnt pull any punches. Se7en was really good Sixth Sense less so if only THAT sparked a minicopy cat formula of must have plot twist that catches you off guard.

Yep seen it good movie. Love "horror" movies (though vanishing is more a thriller) with a plot though I do have a big soft spot for old horror flicks, Vincent Price, Legosi etc. Also cheesy horror movies like Reanimator and all the rest of Comb's movies Good zombie flicks too are always fun, despite my complaining above I loved Dawn of the Dead (both the original and remake) and loved the Night of the Living Dead remake, the scene of the red hair girl standing there with a woman approaching her with a doll in her hand and she just screams out the sheer insanity of it all is top notch. Sorry but if the dead came back thats how people would react. Main thing for me is the film makers actually TRYand dont just phone it home with standard formula crap, I can deal with mad man killer slash flick if its actually well made. I thought Rob Zombie Devil's Reject was pretty fun.

Yeah, so sad, but all things said aside, its just the LITTLE things that annoy me, like the stupid girl that leaves her safe hiding place and runs around making as much noise as possible, forgetting there is a guy with an axe in the house, not that that was me

Ya, there's a lot of retardation that goes on in these films:

They know something nasty is out there so they leave there hiding place have to yell out "Who's there"

The gun runs out of bullets so they throw it away. I see this all the time in movies.

Also, it's the dumbest, poorest acting teenagers that get killed WHO CARES!?! At least in The Descent it's a bunch of fairly likeable gals that get knocked off rather than Tina no-brain the cheerleader.

The Descent is probably the most recent horror movie that was actually scary.
While somewhat cliche story, it still managed to create some nice scary moments.

Usually can't stand horror movies. Sometimes I will find some things I like in them though. For example in The Hills Have Eyes remake (spoiler tag incase you haven't seen it and don't want the end ruined):

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
the nerdy/wussy guy that who complained all the time and we all KNEW was going to be the first one to die turns out to be a badass. Not only does he save his kid and get them out of peril, he goes on the offensive and basically becomes the "monster" himself. After he kills the big guy with the flag you are thinking to yourself "which one of these freaks is going to get it next?" and he and the dog go on a mutant killing spree.
