Default Rum, Sodomy & The Lash

Just recently I had my squeaky clean portuguese faction heir sail from Iberia to Antioch on a Crusade. The man had never been in a settlement with brothels or worse and had had a pretty righteous life up until then. A few turns later, he sets foot on dry land with his crusading army and he's turned into an alcoholic, and "shameful" to boot. He conquers Antioch on the next turn, but after that he was soon to have a foreign fruitcake in tow, I wonder if he shared his Holy Grail for a few late night drinks with him. Soon he had "trouble at home" and became a cuckold. All this happened with high Chiv and Pious values, he ended up being called the Honourable.

So, do long boat trips make characters turn into degenerate drunkards? Bloody sailors...

Being on a ship does that to characters. They make them drunkards and lazy. There's only a 3% chance to get both traits each turn. But once you get one, more trait triggers fire.

I suggest using the remove_trait cheat. To remove drunkardness, use "remove_trait this Drink" when you have the character selected outside of a city. Others are:
    remove_ancillary this adultress_foreign
    remove_trait this Arse (shameful)
remove_trait this Cuckold (trouble at home)

tottaly true. When a faction attacks for no reason i always go punish them. First victory I release the prisoners to show my good faith. But if they attack me again i just slaughter the prisoners so they wont do it again. and then the real punishment begins. Bastards

LOL, I've realized that "gets merry" trait slower decays into alcoholism. I guess I don't mind that trait that much, but the fruitcake trait is the worst. pwijnands, thanks for letting us know how to get rid of these traits.

No problem, it's even better yet to mod them out completely. It's the first thing I did when I got this game, got rid of all bad traits/ancillaries that you get for not doing anything wrong (corruption with high treasury, bad traits for building brothel buildings etc.).

Nah, modding them out defeats the purpose... might as well delete all negative traits and ancillaries and get it over with.

What I do is to tweak the triggers that give these negative traits and ancillaries instead; lots of work, but it's worth it in the end. The problem with vanilla M2TW is that it is ridiculously easy for your characters to gain negative traits and ancillaries; but on the flip side, exceedingly difficult to gain positive traits.

To balance this in my personal mods, I made both negative and positive trait acquisition hard; but not exeedingly so. Now negative traits are hard to get... while the positive ones are a bit easier, but still difficult. This was done by toning down the effects of certain buildings and faction treasury as well as adding in a random modifier to almost every trait that triggers from buildings, treasury, etc... The only traits that don't have a random modifier are those that are triggered from situations such as a successful/failed assassination, etc. When characters do gain a trait, both good or bad, it thens become easier (but not too easy) to gain a level in it. Vanilla M2TW also had it so that you gained level in negative traits way easier than positive ones. It was like CA just wanted us to have screwed up characters aftr playibg for 20 turns.

I can understand why a character would get the drunk and arse traits from being in a boat for too long, no problem. But the alcoholism thing is running out of control, in my last game the family tree is watered by constant flow of hard liquor, even tough I don't build Brothel/Inn buildings. Maybe they're getting it from the mass wine, I do build a lot of churches. Or maybe I just shouldn't conquer Bordeaux.

This is why I always try and land my army on the coast of nearby province before the end of a turn. I'd rather take a small rep hit with a faction for entering their land than get bad traits on my generals. One can be cured with money, the other is permanent.
