When you siege a city, do you usually build a lot of siege towers/ladders and attack from the front or do you build one or 2 and attack from the side?

Front.

If no time limit,I attack from the side closest to the settlement square, eliminating towers with Onangers or Ballistas I employ. I usually secure the area then use Onangers to pound the troops in range at the city square, particularly targetting Generals and Armoured troops if there?
You can attack the front, but section of wall(stone) with less Towers best,if wooden just use ballista to eliminate first. Use Siege towers to shoot up defenders first before docking, very handy.
Since the siegers usually get a fat 'u' shaped deployment space, I just position my equipment on any of the sides. This plan usually also depends on how much equipment I have, and how many troops. I usually attack from the front and 1 side, so that they have to fight on two fronts. If I have enough troops, I sometimes attack on 3 sides, then use the pause game function to coordinate all my troops.
i usually have a unit or so go on the side, but the rest is in the front.
Front, unless you get faster to the central square from the sides.
...that's the key point
The way I siege a city with walls is usually with ladders only. I might build a ram just in case, but I rarely need it. But I almost always start the siege from the sides and enter the city from the front.
I recruit 2/3 units of fresh merc infantry(swordsmen preferrably) and send them up the ladders(taking all the arrows from the towers...) to begin taking towers. Once that happens the towers begin working, for me, on the inside defenders.
After they've cleared the towers surrounding the ladder I send my regular army alaes(Italian Swordsmen/etc) up the ladders to begin engaging any defenders around the front gate. Once the walls are cleared I move my unmolested army into the city. In some instances the towers kill whole units of defenders before I ever finish taking the walls, usually by the time I've taken the walls/front gate there're hardly any defenders left.
Doing this I have all my troops fresh and ready for the assault on the city square.
i always get shot up by siege towers, but how do you get the siege towers to shoot at them, they never shoot for me![]()
You have to click on the unit that pushes the siege tower, and click on enabling fire-auto, then the siege tower will automatically throw lances (but there is a limited amount) when it nears the wall. However the first time I saw that was in Barbarian Invasion when either Hun or Vandals siege towers sieging one of my cities used that. So I am not sure whether it's a BI feature (BI means Barbarian Invasion, for any noobs new to the RTW world) or it's an RTW feature.
You have to get a unit on the top of the gateway to capture the gate way towers and for the others I think you just have to have a unit near them on the wall?
I always attack from the front. Lets me put all my units in one place and overwhelm them.
Front. Going from the side gets you pelted by arrows, ballista bolts if its a big city.
Varus? Where are my freaking legions?
