One of the best bands ever, though I don't listen to them that much anymore.

If you like JD I recommend listening to The Chameleons and Dead Can Dance's first album. They're all pretty similar.

I like The Chameleons, but they're not really as jagged and raw as Joy Division was in most of their work. And even though the British press has recently been comparing every single pack of shellac-haired, painted-up, scrawny cretins to stumble onto a stage in their country to JD, I haven't heard a single band yet that is quite like them.

I agree, but I don't think there's much closer. Interpol are quite similar too I think but I suppose they fit into your category of 'shellac-haired, painted-up, scrawny cretins'.

Much of Joy Division's rawness lay in the lyrics, which came from from a self-destructive Ian Curtis. In a way, we should be thankful we don't have another Joy Division today.

I could never get into Joy Division. I love this song, and I bought the Substance album, but I disliked a lot on it. Well, maybe not dislike, but I wouldn't be able to sit through the whole of Atmosphere or Warsaw

    Great song that.
Rather fond of Dead Souls too.

And obviously Peter Hook's just great.

Then I weighed him I said, “Holy ****!” because he weighs 900,000,000,000,000,000 tons. That amazing weight made me say the “S” word.

The last three songs on Closer are enough to make anybody reconsider living.

Indeed. I once wrote a review, here it is.

And sorry Marcion, I like both the Chameleons and DCD (I assume you refer to the Garden of Arcane delights) but only JD sounds like JD...

I'm not sure about divine music, but for dark lyrics there is also The Holy Bible, by Manic Street Preachers. 4st 7lb is one of the most disturbing lyrics I've ever read (hearing it didn't leave much impression, so atonal and jagged was the song).

I have Unknown Pleasures, but I don't really listen to it that much. I'll give it a run through soon.

I really want to see that. I would no matter what it was about, because Anton Corbijn is my favourite rock photographer/director.
