Icon1 TeraDisc Technology just around the corner - Blu Ray and HD-DVD soon to made obsolete

At the CES 2008 show Israeli company Mempile have created a disc that can hold a staggering 1Tb of data. To put that into some kind of perspective you have to compare it to existing Disc technology,

    - CD 700MB’s
    - DVD 4.7 Gb’s
    - DVD DL 9.4 Gb
    - HD-DVD 15 Gb’s
    - HD-DVD DL 30 Gb’s
    - Blu Ray 25 Gb’s
    - Blu Ray 50Gb’s
    - HD-DVD Triple Layer 51 Gb’s
    - Terradisc 1000 Gb’s

That’s a mammoth leap in technology considering a lot of us still use CD’s as choice of moving around sizeable amounts of data.

Claims of the 1Tb optical disc go back to 2004, this is the first time however the Terradisc has been showcased. Like all new technologies expect this to cost the earth but this has massive commercial potential and when it becomes cheap enough consumer potential as well.

To bad it will be expensive and wont't have any good films since most films went exclusives

Give it enough time and that disk will look small...

    - HD-DVD 15 Gb’s
    - HD-DVD DL 30 Gb’s
    - Blu Ray 25 Gb’s
    - Blu Ray 50Gb’s
    - HD-DVD Triple Layer 51 Gb’s
    - Blue Ray 100Gb's Quad Layer (in the near future in the market)
    - HD-DVD 170Gb's 10 layer 17Gb per layer (achieved but not on the market)
    - Blue-Ray 200Gb's 6 layer 33Gb per layer (achieved but not on the market)
    - Blue-Ray 250Gb's 10 layer 25Gb per layer

There's also the new memory technology from Samgung.

Hardly usefull for the consumer market, people may buy one to make a full backup if they have alot of hd space this is assuming of that the writer dosent cost 2 grand which it will. This is more interesting for large companies that store ludicrous ammounts of data.

But with the volume and read speed increasing, why would you have a hard disk? (After the price has dropped to acceptable consumer levels, of course).
All you would need then is a 'plug and play' OS, and you can easily take your system - all your software/files with you. It would just be using other hardware. Kinda handy for students and businesses - and LAN parties?

will there be such a use though for a disk of that size? you can easly fit even long movies on one disc.

i can see a benifit of fitting an entire series on one disc, but other then that, would it have many civilian uses?

I could see an entire DVD collection being saved on one. Pop in one disk and be able to play any movie title in your collection at the drop of a hat. I do think this would be more for the commercial sector though, but who knows what's going be around then in terms of other hardware (Intel Skulltrail is looking amazing - 8 x 4GHz cores).
