Default Question RE: Ranged units and range

I have not seen anything around here about ranged unites and their effectivness according to their range to the target.

1.) does TW:MII vanilla include range in it's calculation on determing hit, and is the modifer function F(r) known?

2.) is there a min range where below this threshhold some ranged units will not fire? (i.e. can a motar fire at a unit next to it?)

Thx to any who might be able to satisfy my curiosity

I am unable to give statistics, only my experience with them but as noone else has answered yet maybe it will help.

Archers and crossbows seem to have an optimum range, extreme range gives minimal casualties as the arrows/quarrels disperse more the further they travel. I seem to get most casualties at around half their effective range but then I dont seem to shoot much when things are up close and personal.

Siege weapons are weird up close, I dont think they have a minimum range but they dont seem to be any more accurate either. Ive aimed a catapult at a unit close by and seen the shot deviate 3-4 times the intended distance.

Ballistae almost definately get more accurate when reducing from maximum range. I can say this with almost certainty as I use them exclusively when taking down gates until i get gunpowder. If a ballista uses half its ammo taking a gate down at maximum range then reducing the range only slightly will vastly reduce the ammount of ammo needed to destroy the gate.

Sorry for the vagueness of the reply, as I said ive no statistics to prove any of it
Hit them as hard as you can, as fast as you can, where its going to hurt them the most..... and preferably when theyre not looking!

It's weird i don't understand sometimes-when im using catapults in battle when the enemy close me at some distance then my artillery turns back to get to more comfortable position to fire,BUT when the AI atacks me with catapults i have noticed that they may fire at any distances ! And most of all once when i was fighting the moors they shoot MY general at point-blank shot..

Yes, artillery really like generals. When I opened fire on a plaza filled with enemies, the only casualty I inflicted was their general.
