    Default Warner backs Blu-Ray.

This was expected some time ago, Warner Bros. is backing Blue-Ray. Already rumours of Paramount backing Blue-Ray in the short future are appearing (Finantial Times), but so far denied by Paramount. In short, Paramount has in their contract the flexibility to move to the Blue-Ray group if Warner Bros. drops HD-DVD (which has happened).

If we looked at things about 2 months ago, we could say they were in a stalemate, however with signs of the Blue-Ray gaining greater market strength and influence.

Presently, with these news, many analysts are now stating that the format war is now starting to present a clear format victor.

And quite a few others. Sony was one of the founders of DVD too, after all.. there was no outcry then.

    DVD Founders List

    BluRay Consortium

Not so dissimilar, mainly Toshiba/JVC missing from a hardware perspective, but most of the others are still involved (Matsushita(Pioneer/Technics), Hitachi, Mitsubishi,Thompson..).

Good news indeed, I rather have 1 Hd format then 2. I hope this format war end soon.

That disk won't even be in comercialization in a year, nor there are drives for it, you can't use it for comparison, the disk isn't even presently competing with the current HD formats. It's simply not part of the competition, what matters is the present, not numering new possible formats in the future, if anything that disk could participate in the new format war, when new formats will also be able to reach and surpass the numbers they are presenting, secondly, a format needs a market base, it will be extremely hard if not impossible on how things are now, for a new format to simply pop up and try and gain control, mentioning any new possible future formats is not going to do a difference. The format which wins now will be the one able to dominate the market for some years to come, what matters are solely the formats which are in competition now.

They have in development a true hologram storage device that will make that look archaic. Petabytes of information on something the size of a playstation memory card that can be accessed at speeds beyond anything inside your PC (if I remember correctly, it was in the order of 250 GB/s). I'll have to look for the papers...

It could have been 25 GB/s.. Hohoho

You mean Terabytes, I'm aware of the format you're talking, it's the one being developed by Samsung right?

From what I've read, a format such as those could appear for the PS4, despite the fact that Samsung said that this format would be available in about a year and a half, perhaps a more developed version for the PS4.

No. Petabyte. It was in New Scientist or something... I'm having trouble with my google-fu trying to find sources...

PS3 is the way to the future. Apparently my investment was right. Suck on that XBOX360!

I'm confused by this whole thing.

Is the whole argument for which is better based on the amount of data each format can hold? Not the image quality?

The little bit I have gathered, which is not much yet, is that neither is drastically better than the other. They both provide a similar end result but use very different methods in getting there.

I would be incline to support HD-DVD because it's the underdog, cheaper and simply personal preference against Sony. Not great reasons but the only ones I have for now based on the few details I know about the two technologies.

At this point HD-DVD can only hope to co-exist rather than win out.

Doesn't HD-DVD also have native internet support? You can put in a disc and if your player is hooked out to the internet (HTPC for example) it can download new content?

Wow... First thing, how can something in the present be the way of the future? Before this matters the PS4 will be out, and so will the Xbox 3000(random number, why not). Secondly, your PS3 is already worth less than what you bought it for (what kind of investment is that?). And Finally, the Xbox can be easily updated to use blue-ray, its a minor hardware adjustment.

    Strange.
I heard that HD-DVD is the same as Blu-ray except cheaper.
    Is this true ??

The differences between the two are negligible, except that the HD-DVD player is cheaper to make.

They do operate on simpler technology, so they might cost less, but that would be one of those negligible differences to me (a few pennies difference isn't enough to bother with)
