    Default DirectX10 on XP

I thought you guys might be interested. Microsoft has stated that it will not support DirectX 10 on anything other than Vista, but a group called the Alky Project has been working on it. The company is shutting down to reorganize, but the initial release looks good, and hopefully they get it finished.

Its in the alpha stage, but check these screenshots:

I thought Microsoft changed their minds on that since Vista is selling so poorly.

If they have, I havent seen it. The DirectX SDK for November doesnt have any reference to XP at all. In fact the only listed compatibility changes are:
    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/xna/aa937789.aspx
    Changes in Visual Studio Support

The March 2008 DirectX SDK will include support for Visual Studio 2008. At the same time, the DirectX SDK will drop support for Visual Studio 2003 while continuing to maintain support for Visual Studio 2005.
I dont think they will change their position here:
The DirectX 10 API will have completely new and faster dynamic link libraries (DLLs) and is supposed to run much faster. The company decided to cut the backward compatibility with DirectX 9, 8, 7 and lower in this API but there will be a way to use games programmed for those APIs. Microsoft will enable support for DX 9 or lower games through a software layer, meaning it might run slower.
The company did this to make the next API faster, it said, and at the same time will take some burden of the CPU runtime. At the same time we learned that DirectX 10 will have support for Shaders beyond Shaders, model 4.0.
The only sales they are able to get out are on computers that are made by companies like Dell and Gateway.
That's hardly true. Yeah I know Microsoft Watch likes to play with the numbers with statements like this:
A license sold isn't a license a sold. Microsoft counts licenses sold to OEMs in the 20 million number, but the number of actual Vista PCs sold is likely much lower.
But the fact is that a license sold through an OEM is still a machine running Vista. I personally have bought a few hundred copies of Vista this past year.

you see id buy dx 10 and vista torrmorrow if vista OS wasnt over 200 pounds for the top of the line model

its stupid and i guess it was wishful thinking they would make dx10 backwards compatable, lets be honest is the only reason alot of people are paying that much money for it.

Actually most consumers are probably business users.

Because of the way the API works backwards compatibility is pretty hard, in fact the guys who are working it for XP had to create all new .dlls.

is this techmixer site reliable? The site is filled with broken english (even their site slogan - "Tech Make Life Difference"?!... ) and idiotic user comments. It's the type of English I'd expect from phishing scams and spam. I hate to discriminate based on poor English but you can't be too careful nowadays, and right now I'm highly skeptical. I'd advise against downloading and installing anything you find from that site...

Does Directx10 Improve graphics overall or just something you need to play future games?

Just look at the screenshots on that site (techmixer). There seems to be a staggering improvement. An update: I found an old article about the project on slashdot: http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl.../04/23/1348239, but the claims are UNSUBSTANTIATED. Don't go installing DLLs on your system from anything BUT a trusted source. I won't be touching these until it is widely reported as sucessful and malware-free.

So, if I installed Direct X 10 and started playing Warcraft three would I see some brand new improvements? [And does Vista automatically come with Dx 10?]

No. You would need to play a game or use a program built with dx10 in mind.

You would also need a DX10 compatible graphics card.

That is a great news indeed, majority of computer users are gamers and there're too many problems with Vista yet ,so XP is now more preferable choice of OS.
    PS
    In case it's serious,of course.

For now, it's an added extra. Eventually games will, without doubt, require it.
