I know there are some of you GH fans out there, I'm wondering...which is your favorite title? Please vote and then post your choice and explain why. Mostly I've been trying to see if I want to bother getting the first GH and the '80s version for the PS2, if they're not that great then I'll just stick with II and III.
Also, what are some of your ideas about ways in which to improve the games? I've been thinking about stuff to make the series so much better and hopefully one day they will make these changes...
1) They should create a way in which when you buy a GH game and put it into your console, there should be an option to automatically download every single track (and its appropriate fret board animation) onto your Xbox 360 or PS3 etc hard drive. Then, when playing later games you have access to almost every song in the series without having to switch games. For instance GH II will download all it's songs onto my console hard drive when I insert the disc and say...enter a key code that can only be used once (to prevent people just passing around one game to get more songs). Then when playing GH III I have access to all the tracks in that game and all the tracks on GH II without having to insert GH II.
2) A mechanic should be included for players to create their own set lists. Players should be able to take specific songs and put them into a "mix" via the quickplay menu. Then simply hit a "begin" button and ta-da you now have a series of songs YOU want to play without having to play one, exit to the menu, scroll up/down, and pick another...they're all right there.
3) A "no break" option...when you play venues and set lists you should have the option to play it from beginning to end without having to finish a song, exit to a score menu, exit to a money earned menu, then return to the set list page only to choose the next song. It should be more like a concert with continuous play.
4) Make the game more RPG like...yes this would defeat the purpose of his "party game" but here me out....
Alright so GH III sort of gave you a simple story yes? About you being in a band and rising from garage rockers to ultimate superstars, etc etc. Well how 'bout embellishing that concept? Here are some concepts/mechanics that could make it more RPG-like
- Like with Rock Band, but with a little more have the player able to totally customize and create their character
- Be able to choose what kind of band you want to be: rock, hard rock, metal, heavy metal and thus your lengthy set lists are all songs that could be lumped into these genres. Example: choosing "heavy metal" would give you songs by the likes of Slayer, Slipknot, Lamb of God, etc while "rock" would give you like The Who, Santana, The Police, etc
- Be able to do things like choose agents, visit possible venues/clubs to see if they'll let you play, buy equipment, hire roadies/technicians/advertisers, release CDs and see how they sell*, attract groupies, move around the world to different areas, hire/fire band members, include a year/tour cycle**
5) The ability to free-style! Have a mechanic where it's quite possibly to write your own guitar solo or song that can then be played in a "quick play" fashion or insert your solo into an already existing track.
*My idea for the CD thing is that at given times in the game when you have enough songs you've been playing live you can choose to record and album. Doing this will put you in "the studio" where you choose a given number of songs from your set-list options to be on the CD. Then you go about recording them. The success of the CD will then depend on how well you scored in recording the given song. You'll only have one shot to record the track to prevent the player from going back and redoing the song until it's perfect in order to sell well. The success of the CD will also depend on your band's current popularity, exposure (under the control of your hired agent or advertiser), price (which you'll be able to set), and the success of your follow up tour.
**The idea of the year/tour cycle I think would be what would give the game its longevity and replay value. You'd start your band from square one, year zero as it were. As your band gains popularity you'll be able to do more over your alloted time span (which would be either one year or 6 months). In other words when you first start out you may only get one gig that year, meaning if you do horribly you may not get "discovered" for a few years and then you have to look for gigs and maybe put out demos, etc to help you make it. Yet, when you become more popular the demand on your band will increase and you'll have more to do over that time span. These demands would include recording CDs, hiring personnel, planning tours, and essentially actually going on these tours. The tours would take place within a year but would be made up of a series of venues and set-lists in succession of one another...much like how GH is now only with one venue and slightly augmented set-lists every venue. As your band becomes more mainstream your tours will be bigger and longer.
You'll also have the option to have other bands tour with you and when you're starting out..to go on tour with a headlining band in order to become more popular and known.
Eventually as the years pass band members will either lose interest, get better offers, or maybe even be affected by special events like "finding jesus" (a la Korn), leaving because of band infighting, or even tragically dying. Your band will also grow and die with the popularity of it. You may play once and have your band last as long as Lynard Skynard or Black Sabbath with 60 year old metal heads rocking out on stage or you may play another time and hardly make it out of the garage...or you may be a flavor of the week and make a small dent and fade away.
These are just some ideas that I think would make the game a little better. Got any more?
