    Default Online Tactics

What's everyone's online tactic's and how did you fare?

I used to constantly play as Scotland online, I would create a solid line of the best pikemen I could get.. front line 4-6 pike units long followed by shock units in the 2nd line. 2 units of heavy cavlary and 2 light on each flank... and if I am lucky mabye a unit or Archers... dont bother with Artillary.

This seems pretty defensive but my idea is to go on the attack straight away, no time for skirmishing or exchanging missles. Id march my force straight at the enemy.... intercept any cavlary that tried to outflank with my own then pummell my pikemen into thier line, id let the pikemen get in about it before charging with my shock troops to break the line.

while this is being done my light Cav would chase down any missle troops or keep any missile cav running about the map out of the way and with any luck any cavlary left would outflank and smash into the rear of thier line causing a rout.

This Hedgehog formation worked brilliantly online..especially against players who over over compensated on Artillary, Cavlary or Archers.

I only ever lost one battle and that was with a guy who used war elephants.... he absoloutly destroyed me!

Hi here's a thread I made for my Kingdoms tactics the balancing is slightly different than with M2, but tactical deployments are pretty much going to be very similar anyway that link shows a flank move not the best one, but just one.

Thats a really great read... they do say Cavary should never go forward without Infantry support lol

Whats you assesment of the tactic?

From what I can sort of gather it seems you did go too far forward and ended up with your cavalry engaging the enemy without ever really flanking them proper, your infantry then showed up and tipped the balance in your favour.

I think it would have devastated your opponant if you feinted an attack with those massed horsemen, by going forward you would have made him panic and he would have to wheel round to prevent a charge... but instead of attacking you could hold off and threaten until your infantry arrived to engage him then when he is locked in a battle with your infantry you could try and get in behind his lines and smash him

I may be wrong, but thats what I am sort of gathering from the pics and descriptions.

Great Thread though, nice that you show the mistakes aswell

Yeah. If you know they're using Timurids, invest in a few cannons. It'll help you survive the big hit you take from elephants. That'll at least -help- if you're using Scotland, as you'll scare some of them away, thereby hampering their advance.

Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it. I would have to agree with your assessment of the flank move. Sometimes though in the heat of battle you can get carried away and it really takes experience to be able to control your emotions and think clearly enough to make the moves you need to make. But as I noted I didn't quite get off to the best start either haha...

Feint attack would have been good, but at the same time it's tricky becasue you loose some element of surprise once your enemy knows the structure of your force so large feign doesn't always work out like it did in history. But for that I would definitely need better horse archers.

Maybe when I get a chance I'll post some of my m2 battles on this thread.

Yeah thats very true, is easy to comment and say what should have been done but another thing entirely when trying to control all your units in the heat of battle.

Would love to see some more battles if you get a chance m8

Well I haven't had a chance to build up another M2 report and not sure when I would get around to it so I figured even though this is a little out of place it's at least a mod for Medieval 2 but with totally different balancing I'm afraid

but here you go anyway http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=141216
