How early does everyone try and capture Timbuktu? If you grab it do the moors make a big push to get it back?
I usually don't take it until I have the Moors are either dead or at the brink of extinction so they are not likely to even think about getting it back.
Generally I don't take it, ever. I find the AI merchants don't wonder down there much, so mine are safe enough without owning the province.
Does the AI ever try to take it? I have not seen it in my short M2TW career.
Playing as Moors, I took it around turn 70, which was, IMO, way too late. Holding Timbuktu allows you to build mines on the gold shafts. I do not know if this increases your gold merchant's output.
I was also way too late in getting merchants down there. I sent one merchant down at the start: what a joke. It is now turn 80, and I am just getting the last of 7 or 8 merchants in place to harvest the bounty.
I don't think I ever had the AI try to take it (or the colony to the west). As spain I basically tried to hold off the french to the east and concentrated all my forces down there. Gold makes money.
Plus, there's the glitch if you put a fort on a resource you can put multiple merchants in there and are immune to foreign merchants.

I have never taken it either, but in my recent campaign as England I wanted to see how fast I could get there and secure some nice trade income. Owning the city can allow me to replace the merchants as they die. Based on the replies it sounds like I won't need to bother defending it much. Guess I have a free stack to start conquering Africa.
I had trouble finding out how do get to it the 1st time i played
playing as sicily, i firstly saw the Moors take it and then the Spanish.

I did get a few rebel attacks down there. And I never wanted to lose it so I kept some good militia and canon towers.
I found out last night that the fort glitch doesn't work in kingdoms![]()

you wont get some enormous wealth by holding Timbuktu,it never had an income lager than 600 florins.best way to get the money is to stack merchants in the region.
Greetings,
I just posted something about this on the SS thread. I am on a Danish campiagn right now and the earliest I could assemble a small expeditionary force, I sent a few ships down to Arguin. From there I took the trip trip across the desert to Timbuktu.
I've made that trip in my last campaign as well, with England. I find it to be worth it. You can make a bunch of coin.

You are correct sir. That is exactly what I did. Well, that and markets.
I dont go out of my way to take timbuktu without taking the north african area above it but that is purely for aesthetics as i think it is probably well worth doing.
It has always been a good money maker for me.
Hit them as hard as you can, as fast as you can, where its going to hurt them the most..... and preferably when theyre not looking!
I did the same thing with England. I usually dont have a strong millitary down there, so I usually then worked my way from spain down to northern africa.
I suppose you could always ship a strong stack down to timbucktu and move up. Or turn Arguin into a castle, although that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
